Is Specialized a bike shop or a boutique?

Hi

My recent experience is that Specialized is not a real "local" bike shop. I was looking to buy a bike and asked if the wheels could be swapped out for a better pair. "We have not done this before sir" What would we do with the wheel set?" It's better that you sell them yourself"

Same answer about upgrading the group set- "We have not sold a group set to date"

Common guys, get real- be a bike shop

I think you're being unfair here.

They sell the bike as a unit, and most manufacturers spec their bikes and prices as a unit.

For them to swap out a wheel-set for you has implications, and if they ever agreed to it, you'd be lucky. This might be different from LBS to LBS (that sell a variety of brands),  but taking a stab at Spez for this is unfair.

Go try 3 other brands and see how many will do it for you.

(I don't own a Spez, I don't own a Spez shop, I don't work for Spez)

Agreed, it's for this reason I buy frames, then spec the bike the way I want it.

I was tired of being sold stuff I didn't want, fixed stem lengths, crank lengths, gear ratios.

A mate asked the spez guys to change a semi compact set up to a 39/53 and the 12/27 to a 11/23. Looked at him as if he was Chuck Norris, then said No!

As a consumer I want the bike the way I want it, not told how i must have it.

So it's Park Tools, Bike Stand and parts shopping for me. Then I get exactly what I want.

Well.....yes and no - if for example I had a LBS and a bike I stock comes with a set of crests with hope hubs - they are resellable - especially if I also build custom bikes and could possibly sell them on another bike or individually. But if you are taking giant wheels off a Giant or Spez wheels off a Spez or Syncros wheels off a Scott then what would I do with them???

Groupsets is another story. Yes the parts are sellable but I would be reluctant to take your new old groupo. However I would still sell you a different groupset if you so desire and fit it but hand you back the old one to do with what you please.

If however the LBS does not want to do any of the above then all they are worth is a showroom where you purchase new bikes from the catalogue.

So you come on to the hub to complain about a boutique bike shop?

If you dont like it go to another.  Why post it on the hub?

Its called a Concept Store for a reason. If you dont like the concept dont go there.

The "Concept" is a one brand one solution and limit the amount of changes and customisation that you do (which is very costly). There are plenty of LBS's who will do what you want - just not the Specialized Concept stores.

If you dont like whats on their rack then go get it somewhere else.....

first time buyers normally fall for this ... that's the way the bike is and live with it

your LBS can and should be able to sort out your needs, even at a slight increase in price(reasonably) OTHERWISE tell them to keep their bike and go next door,

Morning guys,

When I bought my latest Cannondale the suppliers changed the stem, h/bar and crank for me. Which is pretty good.

It's another story to get a replacement frame from them. Mine cracked!

We had a new shop open here.

Not a concept store but they sell Ghost,Van Nicholas Ti bikes and Specialized.

What was really great was walking in being able to buy shoes and pedals that they had in stock. Not having to wait for the store to order as with so many concept shops.
