Bike Hub Classified section (or should I not go there)

I have been a not so active member here for a while, generally have a quick look at the commuting thread and look at few bikes that I cant afford in the classified section. Sometime Ill  even leave a useless comment or two.

I do frequent a few other forums as well and I guess thats why the Bikehub classified section had me raising my eyebrows.

Im used to members knowing each other IRL, and deals being made without problems a real community feel. Whereas here I notice a lot of underhanded dealings. An example being a member advertising a XTR wheelset and stating good condition, a query is made regarding a missing spoke, the advertiser simply deletes the posting and reposts.

Last night Baron100 posted a S-Works stumpjumper for sale, a few members raises their concerns about the seller ( not in malice IMHO but to try and help the greater community). Baron100 simply deleted the original add and reposted.

Members with bad ratings seem to simply register with new usernames.

Then you also get members who buy up all the well priced items and simply reselling them for a profit. Again in my opinion that spoils it for everyone else, in a community everyone should not be out the simply screw the next guy for a buck or two more.

I don't see this anywhere else, whats up with the cycling community, is everyone wearing too tight Lycra restricting blood flow to critical areas ?

I've seen this many times. There is one in particular that it seems to a big portion of his business model.

Please name (even if by PM). I am definitely not interested in buying from one of them accidentally...

I propose Admin requiring buyers and sellers to register under their real names - the Hub's own FICA requirements with proof of identity and residence.

On the current system, the dodgy okes can run and hide like the Guptas - if we know who you are and where to find you, the appetite to be skelm might be eliminated.

I honestly don't really see the issue with buying and selling.

I know for a fact car dealers and bike shops do the same thing.

At least when you buy from the "reseller" you know it is legit and not a scam...

I have been scammed, (Not on thehub) so I buy most of my stuff from people who are resellers now...

The REAL elephant in the room.  I too have observed the ebb and flow of discussions, debates and exchanges over the years on the Hub. Its clear that a lot of the members know each other well, and many IRL too.  The sad conclusion is that all this faux "community" and filial spirit is just BS, with hypocrisy in abundance.  Actually not really a nice bunch at all, and I certainly ride bikes in spite of the community, rather than because of it.

Now, watch the dogs attack...

WTF?  SERIOUSLY??

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

You actually ride a Specialized?

LOL.

Get your point, but it sort of defeats the purpose of coming and either sell your goods at a good price because you know someone can use it better than you ie spare parts lying around, an old bike that's been gathering dust but could be used as a commuter by a person with very limited budget etc; or hard working people looking for a good deal just to be beaten by a person sitting on the hub all day just to buy stuff cheap and sell at higher price.

I do get it that it's a business or whatever, but if you're not going to restore a bike, don't be a douche and just buy a fork for example just to literally put it up for R500 more tomorrow. I don't really care if it's right or wrong... it's a dick move, and I will personally choose not to buy from such a re-seller. I will even choose not to sell to such a person if I am aware that it's their way of operating.

What I'm saying is I don't care if they keep doing it or not - I just like to know who they are so that I can avoid them...

My rule of thumb is that, once the deal closes and payment must be made, unless the buyer and/or seller is prepared to use their work email address, the transaction should be treated with circumspection.

Fair enough.

So you don't support car dealerships or the likes either?

If the original seller gets his asking price, and the new buyer is happy to pay the resellers asking price its all good...

If there is a fork I want, that is a fair price even after markup I will still buy it. Instead of waiting around for another, which may or may not be in the same condition...

At least resellers usually know their stuff and you probably won't be buying something that's buggered...

What if I work for Oakbay Investments?

Will my association with the Guptas affect my rating on the Hub? :whistling:

Apples vs bananas. A bit more money, complications, electronics and mechanics etc involved in a car... And as Rouxtie said above.

Re the bold part, was still talking about me personally though. I do my research and have been cycling for a while, so can generally see of something's stuffed or not...
