Clothing? AFAIK, that'll be duty alone of 40% plus....?

It's been a few years since I used CRC, but yes, if SAPO manage to advise you that the parcel has arrived, before they return it (happened to me!), then you pay at the counter before they release. If you can track it online when SAPO handle it, then my suggestion is pay regular visits to your local PO and 'become known' long before it arrives.......

Yep.

He'll get a notice in the post, alerting him to the presence of the parcel at his local SAPO branch. Go there, pay the VAT & Duties. Go home with goodies.

Can also phone JIMS to track the parcel with the delivery address, afaik.

Not impressed with CRC at the moment. They sent my order in various parts, with 2 parts of my order via Parcelforce. Part 1 has been stuck on status "exported" for the last week and part 2 sits as "prepared for export", also for the last 7 days. Contacted them and it's being investigated, but that takes up to 5 days apparently.

Part 3 has not even been dispatched. Originally placed order 30 days ago, but one part was not in stock, so eventually swapped it out.

I have used DHL with Evans and it's really impressive how quick they get the stuff over here.

Awesome thanks.

Couple people put an order together at the office (mine in bold)

Ordered:

Gloves

Knee + Elbow guards

brakes

camelbak

shorts

bib

jacket

Will the vat/duties be excessive on the bold items?
I know clothing can be a lot but not sure if gloves&guards fall under them though.

Read here parts are exempt?

I am in the process of (after advise on bikehub) buying a Jeffsy

If ordered to UK +-R30k

If ordered to SA +-R50k

So I 'm going to order to the UK and have family bring it with later this year in August...suggestions?

I reckon if they ride it aorund the block once its second hand and fair game, but not that keen to have them unpack and repack to just prove a point to the PIC

Cycling gloves and -shoes, helmets and body armour are all seen and taxed as clothing (40%). Stupid in my opinion, but no escaping it. Duty is meant to protect our clothing manufacturing companies and the jobs they create, but none of them make ANY protective gear. It should be zero rated.

Parts attract no duty because they want to encourage local manufacturers to put bikes together here and create jobs in the process. So they import the whole bike in a box, semi assembled. Put the wheels on, adjust a bit and straight to the showroom floor. Creating just about nothing in the process. And so killed our own bike manufacturers (Le Jeune, Alpina, Hansom, Peugeot, Du Toit etc.) Sad!

Everything attracts 14 % VAT.

Man, am I grumpy today or what!?

Awesome thanks for the reply.

Wow...that's ridiculous !

Banana Republic

So gloves wil be e.g

(R10*1.4)*1.14 = R15.96

?

40% is helluva excessive for a basically non-existing textile industry Rather tax the cheap chicken imports killing our industry  :cursing:

Meh...still cheaper and products you can't get here so still a win I reckon

Only suggestion is to be honest and not try and defraud the taxman by importing a new bike as secondhand, unless it meets the criteria, which are fairly comprehensive.

Sjoe, where can one find the specific criteria for the defining characteristics for an item to qualify as secondhand ?

I guess you are right.. stay honest, let the taxman defraud you

I'm interested in buying one of these:

Anyone know if there are extra duties on this?

Also, the DHL delivery adds 20%, so I'm thinking of going with Priority Tracked - good idea or bad?

You'll be dealing with SAPO. I've had good experiences with them, and they're jacked up at CapeMail. Deon runs a tight ship.

And no, no duties.

Thanks Myles, that's very useful feedback

(and you've got more than 1000 posts so I may trust you explicitly)

LOL.

Look - like when using DHL, there HAVE been issues in the past. If it were the free shipping vs DHL, then DHL every step of the way as there's no tracking with the free shipping option - and getting info out of SAPO when you don't have a tracking number is an exercise in futility.

As long as you've got a tracking number, which you can convert to a local tracking number by going to www.trackmyparcel.com and then using that to phone up JIMS Customs in Joburg to get an idea of duties etc, you'll be fine.

I know of a couple of cases where Deon has expedited clearance and shipping down here when there's been a delay.

I've also experienced a complete and utter clusterfk by DHL where they sent my parcel to AUSTRALIA because "it was the only plane available" - their wheelspinning to come up with a discernible reason as to how it got on that plane to begin with was amusing, if it hadn't meant a 2 week delivery instead of the 3 days I paid for...

I must add my experience with their great service. I ordered a couple of odds and ends from CRC that was either way overpriced in SA, or that was not available. I had to pay a R130or something shipping fee, because it was a small order.

Order was placed on Friday the 20th of October. This morning the parcel was delivered to my door. Big up to CRC.

Many of you are very lucky. My last two orders with CRC have been disasters. Ordered stuff in prep for Berg n Bush, a good six weeks before the event, and it all arrived last week. I was forced to buy the stuff here and just stated "return too sender" when the courier walked in last week.

They may have good deals, BUT DON'T bank on receiving the order any time soon.

(I did stipulate the express delivery in 3-5 working days and paid an extra amount for it. The stuff still arrived a month late).

Same here. My last order from CRC was a disaster. My order got split into 3 shipments. One item was cancelled, because they thought they had stock, when they didn't. Two of the shipments came DHL about a week apart (I had to pay the DHL fee of R130 twice) and the last item was sent SAPO.

We are not lucky with our orders from CRC - its supposed to be that way. You are just unlucky with yours. And DHL are good with delivery times, but 3 - 5 working days while it needs to go through customs, no way.
