Hi all,

so my mate has managed to break his SRAM X9 rear derailleur, now it is not the entire unit but the plate the holds the derailleur to the frame. Now the question is can the part be bought and replaced or does he have to buy a whole new derailleur?

Attached are some pics of the problem part.

That is fortunately part of the frame and not of the RD. You will have to go your LBS to hear from them f they have a replacement dropout for your specific type of frame.

Most shops charge R200 to R250 for a replacement hangar. They are about R30 on aliexpress.com for the same thing. You have to match it by the shape, they post detailed pictures of each hangar they sell.

It is supposed to break in the event of an accident, saves more damage to the frame.

What he forgets to mention that buying from China will take 6 weeks or more to get here.  So get a new hanger from your LBS, take the old one with to match and then buy spares on the likes of Aliexpress

Its a good idea to carry a spare one with you on rides. Easy to replace on the trail and saves you a long walk home.

Good advice all round. My hanger broke the other day. As i couldn't wait i got a replacement from the LBS for R200. Before they mounted it i took a couple of pics. Now ordered a spare from AliExpress for $1.99. Now that i think about it, for that price i should have bought a couple! Essential item to take along on rides. I have seen a number of unhappy chappies pushing a bike because of a snapped hanger. Myself included. Besides for potentially ruining your event/outing, depending on where you ride, being stranded with a broken hanger can be risky.

You can get them from Olympic Cycles in Cape Town .... i got one when mine broke flying it down there for a race recently, or try Linden Cycles... they have every part known to mankind
