I agree with Willehond. Don't run away from something, Run to something!

I left SA more than 7years ago. Didn't leave with the intention of emigrating. It was something different, got bored and was in the dreaded groove!!!! decided to go for only a year. Culture shock was a major issue here in Taiwan!!! You cannot imagine another culture being so far removed from what we are used to. Nothing and I mean nothing is done in the same way. You come over here - you are totally illiterate, can't read, can't write, can't speak the language- nothing---- vast majority of people cannot communicate with you!!  I enjoyed the whole environment- from the new food (Chinese in SA is not the real deal), crazy traffic, laid back life and then I met the bicycle people!! And I ended up meeting the love of my life- a SA girl, got married and we are still here and enjoying it more and more!! Our 2 boys were born here. Health care is excellent, great salary, (not a lot of public holidays though!!). We have many friends, Taiwanese from SA and all over the world!!

BUT-

I will always be a South African. We go home almost every year!! We are here because we like it, not because we don't like SA. We live here- we have a life and we are enjoying it. If I stayed in SA, I would never have been able to have the bikes I have now, to participate in so many races as I do now, to feel how it feels to ride for a team, because I have time to train and do better !! We can now afford to plan our holidays, to save some money! We give our kids the best we can! We live a quality life with our kids.

I've met South Africans over here- you hear people ask them where they are from -  England!! What the heck ???

We are proud to be South Africans and we make a point of being friendly and showing people where we are from! Iwear my Springbok and  Blue Bulls Jersey with pride. And I am going to get South Africa screen printed on our new tri-suits for this racing season!!

Go for it - if you are going to improve your life!! Don't listen to other people! It is easier without kids, but not at all impossible!!

Pray and follow the answer!!

That is my experience - for what it is worth!!!

A wise black prophet once said "Emancipate yourselfs from mental slavery for none but ourselfs can free our minds!"

Me & no.1 son were driving through Etosha in Namaibia last week with this playing - marvellous stuff.

Re: this thread I think it can mean that if you can't find happiness or peace of mind where you are now, you won't find it by going somewhere else, because you have to take that same mind with you.

as an aside, i was watching the "tribute to heroes" dvd the other night - the telethon to raise funds for the heroes of 9/11 - and wyclef jean did a cover of that song. i think the message was lost on most americans.

What Willehond said is so true. My wife and  will be joining my brother in Australia in the next year or two, but we have made a conscious decision not to dwell on the negatives of living in SA.

We are treating this as one big adventure and are always on the lookout for exciting things to look forward to once we move. We are also fully aware that Australia is not Utopia, just last week my brothers house was broken into in Sydney and his plasma and laptop stolen. Next time he'll learn to lock all his doors when he goes out!

Life is quite a short journey and only you can make it worth your while, so whether you are staying or going remember to love every day of it.

old pirates, yes, they rob i;

sold i to the merchant ships,

minutes after they took i

from the bottomless pit.

but my hand was made strong

by the and of the almighty.

we forward in this generation

triumphantly.

won't you help to sing

these songs of freedom? -

cause all I ever have:

Freedom's just another word
For nothin' left to lose
And nothin' ain't worth nothin'

But it ain't free

Having lived in South Africa for a considerable length of time, I can unreservedly say Life in Africa is not that bad. Consider all the positives and negatives, weigh them up, and you will see that the grass is very green in SA. Life might look great from a distance,in america, europe and australia..... it might seem easier somewhere else, you might earn more elsewhere, but you wont find what SA has to offer, you wont find people with the attitude South African's have. Make the most of life where YOU are, inflation and economic woe affect everyone on a worldwide scale, just because the interest rate is bad in SA dont think its better anywhere else, right now around the world home owners are facing the same challenges, food is becoming more expensive due to many factors. this is the world we live in and we have to accept it, its always been the same, think back 20 years have prices increased on every single comodity?

Yea there a problems in SA, there are problems everywhere.....

there is no Eutopia......

Just do your best, Love your life....love those around you.

Not so meaningful but at least it's catchy -

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye

But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn
The taxi's waitin', he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

I have no immediate plans to pack up and leave, but I've started making enquiries what my line of work has to offer overseas.

I've spent more than R30G to secure my home and family. Small children don't have to learn what to do in a hijacking situation. Families are broken up and children are orphaned by violence.

Think what was acceptable to you, say 7 years ago and see how you have adapted/conditioned to accept these bizarre changes and how it's changed your way/quality of life.

In my opinion the only things that tie me to the country, are family and friends.

People are the same wherever you go.
