You can toss the chainguide. For 10 speed setups the Sram clutch is weak. Shimano is rock solid however. If you dont have a clutch Do what spaz does as was suggested a few posts up. Those things work and you can make one with some pipe and cable ties.

Can you tell me what it is for exactly. I still don't know

It's so that there's extra resistance against the cage moving forwards, which aids chain retention. Think of it as a supercharged spring, that only allows the cage to move forward once the force acting on the cage (through the chain) exceeds a certain value. It also reduces chain slap which makes a bike quieter, an added bonus.

With Shimano you have the option to turn it on and off, SRAM is always on.

Complete and utter BS.

The original 10 speed SRAM derailleurs had an adjustable clutch system. You could set it as you wanted to.

The 2.1 version was not adjustable, but was set stiff out of the factory. Stiffer than the Shimano version, by a small margin.

Current version stiffer still with the X-Glide or whatever they call it.

Do yourself a favour. Put your bike on a workstand. where you can play with it without bending over too much. Get a good coffee.

Keeping the clutch lever in "off" position, feel the tension of the chain and the "springyness" of the deraileur.

Sip coffee while contemplating what you observed.

Switch the clutch lever to "on" and repeat.

Sip more coffee and say, wow, it seems to have stiffened up a bit.

Then figure out which setting you would leave it on while riding if you don't want your chain to slap or even worse, derail.

You will definitely want it "off" to remove your wheel.

Edit: Finish coffee

Will take off the chain guide and turn on the clutch on tonight's ride and see if Ok.

You should probably first make sure your gear change indexing is still spot on with those changes before you ride.

You'll be fine.

Your front derailleur already acts as a guide, in the most important place - on top of the chainring. In extreme situations you MAY lose a chain, but with the clutch on and the FD doing its job, you shouldn't.

If you were on a 1x system I'd suggest a narrow wide ring to keep chain retention optimal, as you no longer have a front derailleur to keep the chain on.

Was always wondering - why is there a clutch on the Rear DR.

Bike salesman couldn't tell me.

Never used it

keeps the chain from coming off in rough terrain and also helps to keep the chain from slapping your frame .... so less noise, allowing other riders to better hear you screaming like a girl down the trail ... well I scream like a girl, so assume all riders do!

You mean you have never had the clutch on ?!!

Simply put it prevents chain-slap

(I only turn off my clutch to remove my wheel)
