Hi there,Quayum has asked me to post this, because he is unable to do so at the moment.

Fire...

Hi All<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

As you may all know by now , I am the new Track Director for CSA . The other track commissioners who will be assisting me are <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />

Dave Street
, Peter Daniels and Corne Bence .

I have already completed a 14 page proposal for the first CSA board meeting which takes place on Friday 9 May in East London . Once the board has looked at the proposal , I will be in a position to forward it to you all for comment ..

So be a little patient , change is happening in your province and in SA as a whole , in terms of track cycling ..

As you are all aware , you guys voted us in , so now we need to do something positive . Please feel free to contact us with any TRACK CYCLING related queries that you may have . If possible , we will assist you .

Also , if you want anything reasonable regarding TRACK CYCLING to be brought up at Board Meetings , we are your mouthpiece  . Make use of us . Don?t after our 2 year term , complain that we did nothing for you .

As a start , could the provinces maybe forward us with a list of tracks that are in their area . Useable and Non useable . Give a brief description of the facilities available .

Could you guys also forward us with the number of track riders that your province has .

Many Thanks

Congrats Abdul. Good luck in your new positon. May track go from strength to strength in SA.

First point of business - how do we go about getting a 15km scratch race included on the progam of events for SA Champs in 2009. This is our best chance at a medal at an international level, yet we don't race it at our national champs.

Cheers

Gary

there is just too much racing Categories at the champs. just have Elite , Elite Women, Juniors racing. then have a separate Champs event for Vets 30-39 , 40 - 49 and 50+. how can you have 5 or 6 people racing for medals (and provincial colours) in 5 year age categories. School kids can be separated into Junior and High School categories.

Hi butafly, yes that is what they do in Australia. They even have a separate date for the madison champs. The problem in SA is the cost associated with hosting a champs. No province is going to want to bear that cost twice a year, and understandably so. Everyone wants to race on the velodrome, so the poor western province guys will need to shell mout twice then. The solution may lie in all provinces contributing towards the champs, so the cost is not placed on one province.

Another point to bear in mind is that a lot a famalies race, so parents and kids ride champs at same time. I agree that spreading the champs out over 4 days is a good idea, as it allows for a morning and evening session.

I don't agree with adding more events on the 4th day. The program should be streamlined in accordance with a world champs or world cup program. This may not be popular, but the 1500m should be done away with across all categories. Pursuits should only be ridden by Juniors and Elite, and then only those riders that meet the qualifying times. If the qualifying times where applied strictly, it would seiously cut down on the number of rides.

We should also consider combining age categories, such as the Vets, so we have 30 -39 not 30-35 and 36-39. let them race together, they do the rest of the year so why not at SA Champs? Selectors for world vet champs could then look at the result sheet after the race to select riders by age category as ridden at world champs. we just don't have the numbers to warrant the current age categories. If we combine them we would cut the number of Vet races in half. This may not be popular as it will deprive some riders of a medal, but who wants an easy medal anyway. Rather race competitively I say.

Finally, have a separate date for the madison SA Champs. We would get more teams racing the madi then. It is proablay one of the hardest races at the champs next to the 40km points, yet it comes at the end of 3 days of hard racing. No wonder the number of teams that enter is low.

Hey Gary, being an ex BMXer what about doing it BMX style, have 3 legs of SA champs in different provinces and award points. If they can do it why not other disciplines of cycling.

They also separate the nationals out in the UK with the Vets riding a completely different date/venue. The Madison is run separately and makes for much better attendance.

I also agree that ditching non-Worlds events and inclusion of Scratch and Omnium should be a priority for 2009.

How you know I am BMX'er at heart?

Not a bad idea having 3 legs, only problem is the clash with the road. It is hard enough at the momnet trying to juggle the 2 calendars.

I agree with Shorty, OMNIUM AND SCRATCH MUST BE INCLUDED IN 2009 SA PROGRAM IF WE HAVE ANY HOPE OF PERFORMING AT 2010 COMMONWEALTH GAMES.

I also think that serious consideration should be given to drawing up a draft selection criteria policy NOW for 2010 commonwealth games, identify events, potential riders, form a squad, start training with one national coach (Dave Street), and most importantly PUT IN PLACE PROPER SELECTION RACES FOR RIDERS TO WORK TOWARDS, and select riders according to clear selection policy.

Hi Gary

I can't agree more, another thing the ladies also need a pursuit, and srct, as well as olympic sprint, the olympic sprint should be over the correct distances and not lap of pe or hector norris.......

If we learn to ride world standards we will better the track riding, also let the girls race with the guys to get them faster, once we can hang tough with the guys we can play in the same sand pit as the girls overseas!!

The points race as Sa's had an average of about 25km, pathetic!!

Ok iam getting off the soap box nowConfused

I still do wheelies and table tops in my dreams. I spent quite a few weekends at Alrode and Germiston in the 80's, and remember seeing you win a few races back then(i think you actually won all your races). You were quite a bit younger than me though.velo2008-05-08 02:48:54

Hi Quayum,

There is a track in Philippi (Cape Town), at the Police college stadium.  We have tried to get access to it as individuals but have been unsuccessfull (these guys didn't even know what the banked oval was for!!).  Maybe you guys can get us access from an official level.

I know lots of guys who would try/train for track if it was more accessible/closer.  Currently it's at least a 90min roundtrip to get to Bellville's velodrome.  I, for one would rather spend that time training.  This track would be perfect for the guys in the southern suburbs.
