Fake Ritchey bars are rubbish

Absolutely. Just such a pity an original Les Paul Standard will probably set you back around R60k these days? Lots of mula, but ja, that would be a once off investment. Will probably survive a lifetime.

Yip 60k sounds about right....such a beautiful guitar though. Don't even get me started on martin D28's, D45's or OM42's...100k plus.

The chibsons and chartins do an extremely good job at faking the real thing. You really have to know your way around these instruments before you know which one is fake. In the example of the les paul...without opening its wiring guts here is how you spot a fake

1.The bridge is further from the pickup than the closest volume knob. On a real its the other way around, but I am talking mm here

2.The G in the gibson headstock is slanted by a 1 or 2 deg...the real one runs parallel with the fretboard

3.The fretboard doesnt have binding

4.The headstock doesnt have wings(solid piece of wood), on a real les paul the headstock is made in three parts and glued together...the wings can be seen through the finish if its clear.

But back on topic...maybe something good out of this thread could be a list of sure tell signs of fake vs. real

I will be the first to admit that I dont now how to spot a fake ritchey from a real

To be honest, I am pretty trusting by nature and have a belief that most cyclist are generally nice people who are not out to screw their fellow devotees. I bought the bars from another Hubber at a price that was a good deal for used bars of 'that' caliber. It was advertised on The Hub and the asking price was not a too-good-to-be-true one.

Naturally i thought I had bought the genuine thing and not in the least bit expecting it to be fake, so when it snapped like a dry twig I was really f**ken miffed to say the least.

The seller says he was not aware that it was fake as he took it off a bike that he had purchased from another Hubber. Perhaps I need to probe him for more info so we can pin point the source of the fake.

If that bar had snapped after a big hit on a downhill or something, then that person would have had such a deep face plant that with a bit of sand they could be buried right there!

So what's the replacement bar going to be? New carbon or Alu bars?

Hope this experience hasn't put you off Carbon products to the point you change you name to AluBoy...just doesn't have the same ring...
