First Time Buyer - Road Bike

Hello All,

Been riding for the past year on MTB and have slowly started riding on the road recently. I am now at the stage that i'd like to buy a nice road bike (preferably second hand). My budget is maximum R5 000 but if I could get something around R3 500 that would be ideal. Just can't afford anything more, and 5k is already pushing it. With this budget in mind can I actually get anything decent or should I rather try save up more?

If the budget is something we can work with what are the key things to look for when buying a second hand bike? I'd like to do the 94.7 this year so with that in mind...

Are they an No No's or musts?

Your comments and input are appreciated.

Thanks to all who replied.

I have been riding for about a year now on the mountain bike and done a few races around the 30km mark. Done some longer rides around 60km on weekends. Still getting used to it but I want to push myself a bit further now. Hopefully going to try and get a Sani2C entry this year and then train hard.

As for the road bike from the sounds of it I need to save up a bit more. For now I think i'll just use slicks unless a bargain comes up.

Thanks

If your MTB is a 29er, remember that all 700c (standard road bike) tyres fit.
