Lifespan of a N/W aluminium chainring ?

Just want to find out what you guys are getting out of your N/W chainrings . I have noticed a "ticking" sound presumably from the chainring after about 700km (whole XT groupset chain cassette and derailleur). Is it better to use a steel chainring ? Do you even get such a thing (other than the XT/XTR ones that come with the 94 bcd chainrings ) ?

Are you sure the sound is coming from the chainring? Could it not possibly be coming from your BB or you're pedals?

If you are sure it is the chainring making the noise , have the chain measured to see if it has worn. Your chain might have worn and is now moving on to the chainring at an angle that is causing a noise.

If the chain has worn to a certain point it could be replaced without needing to replace the cassette and chainring. If it has warn past that point you will have to either replace everything or learn to live with the noise and ride it till the chain slips.

Ditto. Don't think it is the chainring.

Also, check chainring bolts. Couldn't hurt to loosen, re-grease and tighten them to specified torque requirements.

This, had a ticking sound after only a couple of rides and it turned out my chainring bolts were a mm too long so it tightened into the ring but didn't tightened the ring to my spider, got shorter bolts and ticking was gone.

I'm not sure what the (mind you the very first ones) rapide chainrings are made of but I had 4000km+ on one and it still worked perfectly

You must freewheel a lot.....
