Bit of advice required..

Dirt roadie under pressure from mates to ride off road more (tokai ,cedarbeg -XC mostly)

looking to sort out my unloved 29er HT
got a REBA ,new wheels etc

want to go 1x10 (to cheap for 1x11)
like shimano ZEE 640 drivetrain

for those MTBers who know ..
how is 36t with 11-36 as a setup?

Even the guys with full 11speed setups and 42t's on the back are too scared to go 36t on the front. For Tokai especially I would not go higher than 32t. You will only start spinning out at 45km/h+

Only advice necessary...don't be a dirt roadie...

Just buy the XT M8000 or SLX m7000 upgrade kit from Evo bikes or somewhere and use existing cranks. Cassette will be 11-42. And get a 32oval (best option totally in my opinion) or 32 or 34 round ring for the front (depending on the size of your tree trunks).

You must be either damn strong or live in 'n damn flat area :)

I would recommend with 11-36 to go with a 34t (if you are fairly strong) or otherwise, 32t.

I see you don't live in Cape Town...Good luck climbing our hills with that setup :P

Indeed I don't live in Cape Town. My current setup is a 11-42 with 34t ring which is sufficient for the short sharp climbs in this neck of the woods.

But when in Cape Town, I'll be sure to make like Capetonians :)

Before getting a 42T expander I was running a regular 11-36 cassette with a 32T up front and I managed to get up everywhere with it.   Jonkers, Paul Cluver, Eden, Silvermine, Block House, alles.

It's not a problem if you've got the power, the issue is that you have to grind the whole time.  There is no option to switch to a higher cadence.

But going 36T up front is just madness.  Madness I tell you!

im going to ignore the don't be a dirt roadie comment :whistling:

im no slouch on a bike ..don't mind a little grind if necessary

Are you trying to avoid getting a new cassette? Hence the 11-36 instead of a 11-42 10 or 11 speed cassette?

I also thought about sticking a range expander in- either a 40 or a 42 - kore do them

did you stick with 32t and add the 42 expander ?

hows that working for you dirty?

Yip, that's what I did.  I also removed the 15T and 17T and replaced with a 16T.  I tried it at first without the 16T but there was just too much of a jump.  It's perfect with the 16 in there.

I've also switched to a 32T oval ring in the front - it's great!  I've got more top speed than my buddies on round 32's and it feels easier to keep cadence up.  Win-win
