Disc rotors - is there a difference in width

Are all rotor brake surfaces similar or do they differ sufficiently to affect braking performance. I have put new Shimano brakes on my tandem but left the Magura rotors on. Wondering if I should replace with Shimano rotors. Any guidance from somewhere out there?

Rotors get worn down, then they lose stiffness, heat up faster, start rubbing.

Minimum working thickness for Shimano Ice-tech rotors is 1.5mm on the friction part. I think they are 2.0mm new. These are steel with alu sandwiched in between. Others likely to have different specs. Look up manufacturer's website for specs.

As long as your rotors are in good nick and the pads are radially and axially aligned with the friction surface then the Magura rotors should be OK. I cant say enough good things about Shimano Ice-tech rotors though. Considering the loads on a tandem, maybe 203mm Ice-tech front and rear would be a good upgrade.

The new calipers are SLX and the 203mm Magura front rotor is reasonably new. They're OK but I just don't get a solid biting feel out of them and am wondering if the friction surface of the rotors does not match the pads

The pads need a few km of riding to bed in. More important....are the pads and discs clean? Any grease or oily fingerprints on the disc or pads at installation and they'll not bite. Clean with acetone .... carefully.

Also very important is that the pads must sit 100% parallel to the rotor surface. Alignment is critical.

If levers are spongy then bleed the brakes.
