Suggested MTB rides in Clarens

I would suggest contacting Clarens Xtreme. They have a few routes that one can follow and they will sell you a map of the routes for around R20 I think it is.

The main routes I ever found were in the reserve and for this you need a permit to ride, cost R50/day when I was there last.

There is a trail called Toeka which you can download off strava and load onto your Garmin and follow. This is just really farm roads with a little bit of single track in parts. Very boring and fairly flat but a good training ride if you just want to get in some miles.

Hopefully some people can help us out here because I think Clarens has massive potential for MTB routes but I struggled to find any real good ones there. Seems like the locals keep them close to their chest! :cursing:

You are just a few weeks/months too early. We are planning to move there in the next few months and start some regular weekend training camps. MTB and Road. Will keep you posted on progress

Hey Hubbers

Some mates and I will be in Clarens for the weekend with our MTBs and would like to know the best routes.

Any suggestions???

Best route is the shortest to the Brewery or to another pub.

Any suggestions since the move? Thinking of parking at Glen Reenen and just cycle around Golden Gate

Ha. We attacked Clarens about a year ago... wound up cycling on a 4X4 course... became very funny. Then we got directions from Xtreme.. which were okay, missed a turn on the somewhat dodgy direction list and wound up tackling the hiking trail on mountain bikes LOL.

Great weekend - lots of fun, cold beers and great views..

Are you set-up with routes/"trails" in the area yet? Going there for the long weekend, and would like to get some KM's in between the beers :)

Look up Camelroc Guest Farm. It is about 30 kays from Clarens. They have some stunning track up the side of the hill near them, and it goes onto the escarpment.

Just remember to pack your lungs, as you start about 1600m above sea level.

Just had a look at Strava Segment Explorer, a lot of the track is there - look for all the segments at Caledonspoort Border Post.

We just had a lekker long weekend there, and after riding on the trails "administered" by Clarens Extreme, we still managed to get a hike up Brandwag Buttress in. Good times, and times well spent :) MTB Trails were really lekker, using mostly naturally created paths, with some built bits added in. We did the 20km trail around town, and with our messing around, the wife's Polar and my Garmin got to 24km, with beautiful scenery and the added benefit of a brewery near the end.

If you're in Clarens itself, I would say Clarens Extreme is your best bet, for the surrounding areas, STRAVA, etc may work

Laps around the town square, stopping to drink a beer at the brewery after each lap.

My record is 13....

I had 6 beers in my saddle bag/Camelbak, so I don't feel too disgraced with only managing to slt 8 beers in at the Brewery :) No silly laps around the town square though, what a waste of carbs that would've been :) :) :)
