So far, from the 38 votes cast, 90% want to be "lekker". This substantiates claims made that 90% of the cyclists are "lekker". Small sample I know but at least it's a start.

Would be good to have made known to the general population out there that most cyclists are committed to being good, responsible road users.

As at now, we have 64 votes cast.

56 YES or 87.5%

8 NO or 12.5%

Losing ground on the 90/10 split which I honestly (maybe naively?) find intriguing.

As mentioned before, it would be an education to know why people vote NO.

Here is the list that I have compiled from feedback as to thing that WE can do to be better cyclists.

Any further suggestions?

  • “Don’t ride on private property without permission.”
  • “Treat other road and trail users with respect, dignity and courtesy.”
  • “Cool roadies obey the rules of the road.”
  • “Dont be a litter bug! SIES”
  • “Always pay your trail entry fees.”
  • “Don’t be a rogue rider!”
  • “Always wear a helmet”
  • “Hand signals are awesome, and save lives”
  • “Show respect for Marshals, Referees and officials during organised events”
  • “Remember to thank motorists for their patience”
  • “Try not to block traffic”
  • “STOP at red lights!!”
  • “Always try and be a friendly cyclist”

Changed my original post because it is included in "being a freindly cyclist"

I commute with earphones but only wear the non-roadside earpiece - I have been doing so for 2 years... Without them I get A LOT more irate with bad drivers.

If you still feel connected to your surroundings when wearing one, then good for you. Just gatvol riding with guys, you sit behind then and shout "We turning at the robot" and they keep straight on "because they listening to some tune". How the can be so engrossed and disconnected to the world when most of the danger is unseen and generally behind them is beyond me.

1300 views but only 68 votes? Still hovering around the 90/10 split and still wondering why people voted no at all?

It would be good to accumulate more votes so that this can be used as a "look, cyclists want to be responsible" campaign.

Dude, stop worrying about the exception. If everybody subscribed to rational thought and logic the world would be a much better place, but nobody will ever get 100% alignment.

9 out of 10 cyclists agree with you. That is an overwhelming majority of cyclists who want to positively contribute. Use that info rather ;)

I did not lodge a vote. sorry  I will vote now :)

Weird, but I am a bit of a "let your yay be yay and your nay be nay" type of person.  I don't make promises so pledges are a bit weird for me.  At the end of the day we can all be more considerate and responsible, not just on our bikes, but in our daily lives and the way we treat each other.

Talking about pledges you did remind of of when I was in std 6, an organisation came to do a talk and they handed out "virginity pledge" cards.  Most people signed.  Many had not kept their promise a year later :P

This is true. Couldn't have put it better!

On the pledge, it is strange but true that once people affirm that they will behave in a certain way, albeit anonymously, they tend (in the main) to do their best to bind their behavior to their conscience. Kind of like a voice in their head reminding them that they pledged to not litter next time they are on the verge of dropping another Gu wrapper on the trail...

Hi guys and gals,

So there will be a little competition to help spread some postitivity and show people that cyclists actually care about improving and being considerate cyclists.

Effectively, go follow them, retweet one of the dozen or so cartoons over the next 10 weeks and you could win a Garmin Varia.

The messages are based on the lists given here on the Hub.

If dont like the idea or the messages, then simply dont follow/RT it, but please try and keep this postive.

The winner will a be a randomly picked Retweeter who follows, and will be announced early December.

The first picture has just been posted :)
