It's very much a big pay day for the riders and the racing is basically scripted to what the fans would like to see[emoji23] [emoji23] . It quite nice as the riders actually spend quite a bit of time meeting fans and they are all a lot more chill. It is really just a lot of PR, the fans know it but they still love it.

 

It comes from the days when the riders got very little pay in terms of winnings and salary, they used to have crits the week after the TDF and a chance for the riders to earn some good money.. they still have the crits the week after the TDF..and yip pretty much prearranged.
