any recommendations, the GS medium cage or the SGS long cage.

I ride a full suss 2x11 with 11-40 and other times a 1x11 with 11-42.

what is the difference and what recommendations.

the one worry is that the longer derailer could sit lower and be more likely to hit rocks

It basically just takes up the slack , for a cassette with a 42t the long cage would probably be better , for some reason.

But the medium cage should work as well.

Best bet is to go look on the shimano site and see what they say is the max amount of teeth each cage can take.

The 11 speed SGS derailler is only necessary for 3x systems and can accomodate 3x crankset with 11-40 cassette.

The GS derailler can do 2x with 11-42 cassette or 1x with 11-46 (and its great, I have one).

Download the Specifications pdf from si.shimano.com.

To avoid stressing the RD to its limits maybe the SGS would be better if you wand to run 2x with 11-42 or 1x with 11-46....this gives you some leeway on chain length if you run different chainrings or if your rear suspension has a lot of chain growth.

Interesting - now what shimano recommends (from what I've read), but I think they are conservative

I quoted from Shimano's published specs.....which probably describes the outer limits but many of us run converted 11-42 cassettes on Shimano M786 10speed RDs that are only specified for max 36t big cog
