Contador, it transpires, received a heavy blow to the knee in the same crash that saw Thomas abandon. The Spaniard also hit the deck when Nairo Quintana bumped into him on the Grand Colombier. In the end, he fell away on the Mont du Chat and lost 4:19.

Well that was good.

Learned today.

1) Richie cant win. (Sad)

2) Berto is a has been at this level.

3) Quintana doesnt have what it takes to beat Froome.

4) Froome appears to have it all under control.

5) Aru is a douche for attacking when Froome had a mechanical. ...as well as that Nairo. ...not cool ...

Nairo has done this type of move before, so we already knew he was a douchebag. And Aru, well, his excuse is that he is an Italian from Sicily.

Froome is asked about his mechanical and Aru's attack (from under his raised arm!) - my edit

"At the bottom of the Mont du Chat, my gears stopped working and I had to change bikes. Richie was quite instrumental in slowing that group down, saying this is not the time to attack the leader of the race, so thanks to Richie and I hope he makes a speedy recovery."

Happy with Dan Martin and Main Cheese :-)

Not a big Aru or Astana fan.

nice to see Froome in Yellow now. The plan can't be to keep it for the whole tour though ;-)

As I said on Wednesday . . . . I didn't like him much then, I like him even less now.

Thomas crashed in same spot as this a few minutes earlier:

14:12:42 CEST

That's exactly the same corner as the one where Herrada et al went down. Thomas is on the floor, sitting up at the moment. The cameras didn't catch the moment of the crash but it looked like a hard one.

14:05:35 CEST

A crash on the descent, with 3 riders involved.

Eish

I cannot recall a more dramatic week 1 of a Grand Tour

Valverde crashing seems like a lifetime ago!
