its the country.... its not individuals its a respect thing !!! I visit Europe a lot and this never happens to me there...even busses drive slowly when you approach them and they overtake you like they should.

It doesn't matter if your visible or not.... or if there's eye witnesses or cctv... name me one motorist that got sentenced for hitting or killing a cyclist on our roads... ?

Its a respect thing...if they respected us "we will become visible overnight".

Every now and again I hear people (even family saying ..what the hell are they doing on the roads, roads are for cars)... :cursing:

Would be good if you can keep us posted on the progress.  I have yet to see a motorist in SA get nailed properly for something like this.

He isn't going to get away easily with this one - the photo of the car clearly shows the ding in the roof - and the numberplate.

Say no more...this is one of many reasons cyclists fear for their lives on the road and even OFF the road! And they want to point fingers at us as cyclists who has no cage for some protection...

So what should we do to get more respect?

Question is, had Burry not been an SA Olympic athlete and just a normal wannabe, do you think the conviction would have come through?  The family had to put a alot of pressure on police and the prosecutor and had to use the press as well.

I honestly don't know - I hope so - no individual life is more important than any other life.

Not all motorists are tools / chops.

Coming back from the Silos yesterday afternoon, as I approached the junction / turnoff to Fisantekraal (anybody that rides that stretch regularly, will know how sketchy it can get with cars just turning infront of you, or coming from behind and then turn across you) I heard a diesel vehicle approach from behind.

Expecting this "chop" (see I already labelled him) to turn across me, I glanced behind, only to see this oke with a big grin on his face, showing me to go ahead. He then continued to shepherd me across the junction, and once safely on the other side, he accelerated again. A friendly "thank you" wave from me, a quick toot on the horn from him, and we went on our merry way.

So, yes, you get chops behind steering wheels, and then you get this kind of guy (I just kept on thinking, "he must be a cyclist too")

Our laws are out dated and don't protect the vulnerable road users if the get hit. Also, our roads are under policed and the court rolls are so back logged that only "major" crimes/more important issues are addressed.

Geez what a total idiot for not even stopping. Karma will take care of him :cursing:  :cursing:

Looking at what certain of our high profile people are getting away with in this country, I'm losing faith in the concept of Karma.

True, and myself can mention a few similar experiences.  My issue is how the odd idiot that causes the problems get dealt with. You only need one to kill you.

Yep, most definitely a cyclist. Probably also commutes from time to time, it opens your eyes to how cyclists operate.

Ever since commuting I have learnt to actively look for cyclists and I now anticipate when he/she will get nervous and where to drive with relation to them when I intend to turn off.

In an ideal world I think that you can solve the issue by forcing every driver of every vehicle to cycle through traffic on a regular basis. People will empathize with the struggles of cyclists and be much more accommodating. But alas, we are not in Europe, so the majority will never even spend 1 minute on a bike in traffic.

My once cycling whatsapp group just this morning 11:18 got a photo asking if someone know the plate which was involved in a hit and run on a cyclist yesterday morning - damaged shoulder, broken ribs etc etc, requiring surgery.

At 11:48 the owners name and address were found, and legal process have begun to get him arrested..... the power of social media his high... and I hope he gets his just deserts and the injured cyclist recovers completely and well - and doesn't back off from criminal and civil claims...

this what the PPA Wider of the rider should be spending their money on - awareness campaigns are great but don't/won't change attitudes. tracking down motorists and charging them with reckless driving will - they need to know that there are consequences for their actions.

Blondie and I were riding out Karkloof rd a few weeks ago. A taxi moved right over to the other lane when passing to give us a gap. Rare but it happens.

the drunk who killed Jared and Richard da silva on the M4...i dont think he has seen a court room since he walked out on bail...rumour has it that it was R10 000 but apparently dropped to R2000 because he supports his mother and father.

the huge hype...a committee formed to address cycling safety...600 + cyclists attended the memorial...including the mayor of Durban...blah blah blah...i get the feeling everyone is hoping it will be forgotten and the drunk can slip into court plead guilty and and take a R 5000 slap on the wrist for being a naughty boy...if it hasnt already happened.
