Ironman 2017 - PE

The course is relatively flat so the weight penalty is relatively small. There are also a number of water points along the course...(this will have to be confirmed for 2017) . Carrying a 750 ml bottle a the start should be sufficient. Of course should you have a puncture or other mechanical you may be a bit short of liquids until you get to a point.

If the water points are the same as 2017 I will start the event with a single bottle. Even though the gain is relatively small I have found over the years that I tend to have to much crap on the bike anyway. I normall end the bike leg with hot cross buns, energy bars etc still in my pockets and/or top tube bag. Not this year. Minimal this year...1 tube, 1 bomb, 1 tyre lever, 1 bottle liquid, and the bare minimum food...the water points also stock bananas , gels etc.

but the one bottle policy will be dependent on the water points.

I start with a complete bottle with my nutrition in it. Then I carry another with a concentration of my race mix and then just top up my main bottle with the mix and water.

A question for those with IM experience. Do you opt for carrying more that one bottle and put them behind the saddle. Or are the water points enough for you to collect bottles as you go and just keep the one on the bike.

I did the one bottle option at Durban and was just fine but other events do not have the same regularity with there water points and I use rear bottle cages. If  the bike course isn't so hilly then carrying extra bottles may help reduce the problems related to collecting water on the go and not penalise much for weight. Any thoughts?

Years back I started out with 4 bottles.  Now days the water points are of much better quality.  I only have one bottle cage between my aerobars and a 500ml aerobottle.  I keep rotoating the front cage with the pump bottles.  In the aero bottle on the frame I keep a energy drink made 3 times stronger  than normal.  Other than that I use gels.

The only challenge for me is that I have to get a Pump bottle at almost every waterpoint.  If other riders interfere or I drop it I have to stop.

You can speak to Mark Wolff at 32GI, he'll have some good pointers for you.

Be prepared to go LCHF :)

Thanks will look into it but as High5 are the sponsors/suppliers on the day I know they also do zero carbs stuff, but racing without carbs for a full day.... going to be a long day!!

Had a long appointment with a sports dietitian this morning, she is of the opinion that it will be ok to race with carbs but will need to supplement with protein.  She will be reviewing my blood test and and providing a race nutrition plan to balance carbs to protein ratio when racing.... hopefully will work

Not really what I wanted as have sort of got my race nutrition sorted... but now need another mindset to it

Twitter: "Matt Trautman had a pretty bad accident on his bike yesterday; an old lady drove into the back of him. He sustained a compression fracture to L1 and has just gone in for surgery."

Terrible news, hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Has the official 2017 course been announced or will it be the same as 2016?

The literature indicates that its the same as 2016. Of course there could be last minute changes however IM normally announce any such changes by October/November and they did not do so. There may be last minute changes though.

Okay so I have just been diagnosed with Bilharzia. As far as I know I could only have picked it up at Heia Safari or Germiston lake.

Lets hope the Biltricide does its job and blasts this parasite out of my body before EL 70.3. in two weeks time.

At least you have found out now, and not the day after your event. You will feel great after the treatment! Do yourself a favour and go for another blood test in about three months time, to make absolutely sure that you have got rid of it 100% It does come back, trust me, I know, I have been battling with this parasite on and off for about 30 years!

I'm going for another test in about 6 weeks time, just to make sure.

I would love to do an IM....I just don't see how I can get over my phobia of open-water swimming.

You can get over it by starting off slowly in the pool, building up fitness, then swimming in protected open water situations. You must have the fitness to build confidence. Another good idea is to do the open water swimming with a safety buoy attached, and this gives peace of mind. Also, find someone who is an accomplished open water swimmer, and ask them to tag along on your open water swims until you feel more comfortable.

Ironman is so awesome that you do not want this to stop you from doing it.
