I Will be commuting from Table View to the CBD - I will most likely be doing some MTB trails on the weekends.

What MTB would you suggest ? Should I get a second set of Tyre/rims with a Slicker Tyre for the daily commute ? Also Tubeless ?

TIA

Just go with a set of tires that don't wear quickly, no need for a second set of tires/rims, rather spend that money on a better spec'd bike!

There are plenty hard tail bikes in that price range. If you wanted full sus then you would have to go second hand or up your budget a little.

Before looking at the second hand market you also need to be sure of the correct frame size. I am sure the experts will chime in if you specify your measurements.

I may be able to get a  Merida Big Nine 500 29er or a Silverback Sola 2 for R15k

Which one would be better and why ? or should I be looking at something else ?

Silverback , because they have awesome quality and after sale service and their bikes are usually better "spec-ed" for the same price compared to other bike.

Better components and shock on the sola2.

I am a merida fan but the sola looks way better in the looks department...but each to his own :).

After riding with a clutched rear derailleur I won't look at another bike unless it has one. If it says "plus" then it has a clutch that stiffens pulley cage resistance which prevents chain slap on the frame. It is the most irritating noise in the world when you going over rough terrain!

Obviously it does not totally eradicate it especially on really rough sections but it goes a long way to keeping me sane for most of my rid :D

Look at Titan (basically a local variant backed by Merida R&D) lifetime warranty on the farm and better specced than any bike in a comparable price bracket.

From what I can see on Silverback's website the Sola 2 is specced mostly with Deore components (which aren't half bad) also worth noting it is only a 10 sod.

Titan Elite at 14k is specced with SLX components with the entire gruppo been full SLX the brakes seem to be the same as on the sola. Bike is slightly heavier thought. Still this is a clear winner in your price bracket imo.

Also worth noting that when compared with the Big Nine 500/ Sola 2, and several other race ready bikes by BICYCLING MAGAZINE (April 2016) the Titan came out tops
