Wider rims, tyre volumes & optimal tyre profiles

OK Hubbers, please assist/educate.

I'm running a standard 29” Hope/Arch-EX wheelset.  The Stans ZTR website give the inside diameter (I.D.) for the Arch-EX rims as 21mm (pic attached).

So with all the hype surrounding wider rims, I’m thinking of upgrading the Arch-EX rims to something wider.  I’ve always been a fan of Stans rims, and the new Arch MK3 rims has an I.D. of 26mm.

I got the following statement from the www:

“Rim width should match tyre volume.  If you are running a large volume tyre, a 30mm internal rim width provides an optimal tyre profile.  For lower volume trail tyres 24mm and 27mm internal rim widths provide ideal balance between tyre shape and wheel weight.”

It makes sense to put a higher volume tyre on a wider rim.  What is defined as a large volume tyre, or lower volume tyre?  My current tyres are 2.2”, and I’ve never ran wider tyres.

So, do I go for wider I.D. rims for future upgradability if I want to run wider tyres in the future?  Will it work to mount a 2.2” tyres on a 30mm or 27mm I.D. rim?  What rim I.D. will give the optimal tyre profile for a 2.2” tyre?  Another pic added for illustration.

Is wider always better?

I have Mk3 Arch with Spez 2.3 rubber and the tyres are a little more stable than when they were on my other wheelset with WTB Frequency i23 rims. The inner width difference is 26 - 23 = 3mm but I can feel it in corners.

If you get Mk3 Arch then your 2.2 tyres should be at least as good as, but likely much better than when they were on the old rims.

For the Mk3 Flows which are 29mm internal....then a 2.3 to 2.5 tyre is probably a better choice.

I'll shortly be putting my 2.35 magic Mary and 2.3 slaughter on 35mm internal rims.

I'll let you guys know!!!

You going to have to wear a neck brace to handle the g-forces in the corners!! :-)
