how do you see if the frame is bent?

Went OTB at around 60kmph.

If it is all in the mind I will have to apply rule 5 is it?

And you're still alive??

hahaha yes. Thanks to my BELL helmet.

Scapula was left to self heal

I have a plate and screws instead of a color bone, and some screws keeping my Glenohumeral joint together. The 4 broken ribs are also better now.

I will check the frame asap. If it not bent, it must be the mind.... I guess

Check the fork too - has to be removed from the headset to check for a crack.

I had a near fatal incident coming down boyes drive where my handlebars dropped and couldn't brake at all, took my foot and shoved it into my rear wheel.

Destroyed 4 spokes on a ksyrium SL and the sole of brand new shoe but it took me 2years to recover properly. The result was when i decended down hill like constantia nek at 25-30km max i start hitting the brakes and just never had full confidence in the same bike, eventually i sold it just to put my mind at ease.

I came off a superbike a few years ago..... at WELL above the national speed limit  Had to wait for broken ribs to heal and get a shoulder op a few months later and when the shoulder finally healed I found i had exactly the same problem, bike felt like it drifted towards one side......

Although i only ride mtb, to this day I still get that same feeling sometimes. I have 4 completely different bikes and have ridden many different types of terrain, from tar to loose gravel, always the same feeling.....

I just tough it out and pretend it is not there, but man I can still feel those ribs when it happens... Definitely a confidence damper!

Interested to know why your handlebar "dropped"?

Thanks for this. I will check my bike over the weekend, but based on your experience, it seems that it is a mind/confidence thing.

darn...........

I am considering to get off road more... Maybe I should sell both my bikes and get a proper MTB. Its not like I am winning the Argus or any thing.

That story makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck - what happened to your foot after that stopping maneuver !

I came down that same steep decent on Sunday and some aunty hit a sudden right into one of the side streets just before the main road through Kalk Bay and I discovered for the first time how poor the stopping power of a road bike is downhill at a bit of speed. I am 95% an MTB rider with nice discs to stop chop-chop.

did the water test, and the news is bad. very very bad.

It seems that it is the mind that is not so great anymore.

I had the same experience as you in April this year, pulled my cleat out the pedal in a sprint at 60kph. Well I ended up with a massive OTB, a shattered clavicle, some broken ribs and a nasty head wound.

I too had a confidence knock when descending at speed through the tight twisty stuff. Further more I had another very silly walking pace OTB after about 3 weeks back on the bike where I ended up landing funny and braking my back. After a very slow recovery, I got back on the bike and my confidence was pretty much non existent. This was mainly due to my whole upper body still being very stiff and ridged from the broken back.

Slowly I'm getting back to where I used to be and I'm about 80% of the way there. I find I have to just focus on the road in front of me and not the "WHAT IF's". My big issue was learning to corner at speed again due to my neck having limited movement I couldn't lean my head over and thus tip in to the corner, this gave the feeling of the bike drifting wide and not wanting to turn in. You have to remember that the bike will naturally go where you looking and tipping your head over as you enter a corner is a large part of that.

As time has gone on and with some physio and persistence I'm getting the movement back and thus my confidence.

Consider doing group rides where you can follow other riders and use there lines as a guide to get you back in the groove.
