Hi There,

My rear wheel wobbles side to side and i'm assuming the bearings are worn and need replacement.

Not sure if they are loose ball bearings or sealed.

Could i purchase from any bearing supplier or would i have to go through LBS?

Thanks in advance.

You can buy balls and even spare cones from a good LBS but you'll need cone spanners and sometimes new seals too. Tricky to keep the alignment of the axle relative to hub. If water got in the ball races in the hub can be damaged, then the hub is toast.

Cup and Cone. A no. 17 spanner and cone spanner will sort you out. Bit tricky to get the torque right, but with some trial and error you will get the feel of it. If there is play in the axle, tighten it. If the bearings feel notchy, you've gone to far!

While your at it you may as well clean out the cups, cones and balls. Try to keep the balls on the same side they came off. Inspect for any pitting of the surface, then re-pack with some good quality, waterproof grease from the hardware store. Don't get talked into needing fancy Shimano stuff. *Flame suit on!*

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated!!

Will purchase cone spacers and strip/clean and re-assemble.

With a bit of patience / care it sounds pretty doable

take your wheel in to the LBS when you go to buy the stuff. Will ensure you get cone spanners that fit.
