Hi Hubbers,

I am thinking about getting some SpeedPlay Zero's... But i have never ridden with them, and dont know much about them... Who have you have used these pedals, and what are they like in comparison to what i am currently riding with(Ultregra SPD SL).

Are they much better?

The interesting part for me is the double sided entry...

i am not a fan of battling to clip in...

Your advice would be greatly appreciated... :)

I ride zeros, like them very much! I've never ridden shimano pedals, so can't compare. The double sided entry is great, very very easy to clip in. I ride with my heels in, so the free float of the speedplays works for me.

I have ridden both Shimano and Speedplay.. I could never go back to Shimano because of the extra 'float' the Speedplay offers. My right leg goes through an odd motion when I ride and the ball of my foot travels through quite a range of motion, something I can't get with the Shimano pedal...

I ride the speedplay X series - the best pedal ever for the past 5 years no Knee problem - and the problems I started developing in my 1st 20 years of cycling went away!

Zero probably have more than enought float

Where it is necessary, the need for greater float probably trancends most other considerations, but as secondary issues I've read some negative comments regarding the durability and cost of Speedplay cleats, as well as problems with the cleats becoming clogged with dirt etc.

Any comments in this regard?

Dunno about the zeroes, but the free float version totally f**cked my right ankle up a few years ago. To much float can be a bad thing. I think the zeroes allow you to set the amount of float so it might not be a problem. They do give nice clearance around corners though.

@barrykm: I go about 2 years on a set of cleats, about 20 000 or 30 000 km. I always use speedplay cleat covers off the bike. The bottom of the cleat is an aluminium plate, it wears when walked on without cleat covers.

@ Slowbee: If I remember correctly, only the zero Ti has a rider weight limit, the stainless and cro-mo ones have no weight limit.

Christie' date=' what would happen if I weigh more and I ride the Speedplays Ti's? [/quote']

There could be a risk of metal fatigue, most likely at the root of the outer thread.  This means that the threaded part of the axle could break off inside the crank. Then when you get out of hospital & can start riding again, it will be a real mission to remove the part still stuck in the crank, because speedplays dont have a hex slot in the axle, you'll need to drill it out , or get another crank arm.

There may be some safety margin built into their design, so you may be safe - the further you are over the weight limit, the greater the risk. I would not worry about 1/2 kg, for example.
