Rotors and calipers

Gents! and ladies...

Forgive my stupidity, but how do I know what caliper spacer to get for 180mm and 160mm diameter rotors? I also just noticed, that these are riveted in place, no little bolts to change them. Can these be removed and the hub tapped or is it just easier to purchase other rims?

And are these spacers easy to come by?

Seems your hub might be made for centrelock rotors. What bike and what branding on the hub and wheels. Post a pic

I'm not quite sure, is there a way i can tell if it is? And can one swop these out for others?

Brand is Avalanche, hub brand is Shimano. I dont see any other model name etc on the hub.

rotors are consumable items like brake pads. Nobody would build a fixed rotor into a hub. Then you need a wheel rebuild when your disc wears out. So if no bolts then probably centrelock.

There are two common types of brake mounts....post and IS. Front and rear brakes are arranged differently. So there will be 4 types of adapter for each disc size.....post or IS and front or rear

Some post mount types allow the caliper to be bolted direct to the frame for the 160mm size. Larger rotors need an adapter.

The IS mount has tabs on the fork/frame. For these you always need an adapter.

If you post pics we can help with more specific info.

... and no where is the spacers riveted... they normally fit onto the frame with bolts, either bolts going directly from caliber through spacer into frame/fork or they attach with their own bolts and the caliber screw into them.

the spacer would normally have 160mm -> 180mm or 160mm - 200mm etched/stamped/lazered into it.

Hi guys, thanx so much for the info regarding the rotors.

Now, to get back to the spacers, the bit that goes between the, lets say the caliper mount on the fork and the actual caliper. I have a +/- 15mm gap between the fork mounts and the caliper.

Dude...srsly....pics already. Then I don't have to write long essays that cover every possibility.

Front - what type mount (post or IS?), what size rotor?

Rear - what type mount, what size rotor?

This is what I am talking about, are there larger spacers I can use here? Previous owner just had a stack of washers in there, with a thin rubber O ring in between. No wonder the caliper snapped.

Sorry, I was just having supper.

Front rotor is 180mm, and rear is 160mm

A stack of washers? No wonder it broke.

Ok so you have front and rear IS mounts. The adapter on the front is for a 160 rotor. You need one for a 180 rotor. It looks the same but with taller posts where the caliper screws in. Around R100 to R200 from any LBS . Take the old one when you go.

It looks like a front 160 adapter has been fitted at rear. You need a 160 rear IS adapter.

So I managed to buy the spacers today, brakes fit goooood, operates well. I had to fit those little washers in them though. Just one with each bolt.

Thank you guys for the advice and assistance
