Hi all

Super newbie here. Not just to forum, but bike riding too. We live in Durban North.

Hope to become a useful member of the forum, in time :-)

My wife and I borrowed bikes from a neighbour in our complex, and frikkin loved it. The best bike was a Bergamont bike post-105560-14820772330506.jpg

We have now moved to Durban North, and would love to buy our own bikes. Due to our newbieness, we humbly need your assistance.

Can you help point us in the right direction to second hand deals that are in the same quality range, more or less, as that Bergamont bike?

Money is a bit of an issue, so we're trying as cheap as possible without straying from that Bergamont's quality. We don't even know if that bike is regarded as good or bad.

Thank you for any assistance :-)

Three things:

1. Actual budget?

2. What kind of riding you want to do - long distances, tricky technical terrain, gravel grinding, weekend spinning? Plan to race in the future ?????

3. Welcome ????

Have a look in the hub classifieds section. You sure to find something suitable. If you unsure on a deal ask here and you will be sure to get some help.

Thank you :-)

We were hoping between 1.5k and 3k max? Not sure if that's unrealistic.

Basically on the promenade at Durban, or walkways in Umhlanga beachfront, and with capability to go on grass and parks. Hardly ever difficult terrain, but don't want to rule out Giba Gorge in Pinetown, for instance.

Thanks for the welcome :-)

By the hub classifieds section, do you mean the classifieds as part of this site, or another? Sorry for noobish questions...

With that budget you really not going to get much. This industry is expensive and as you loved it, you soon arw going to get more into it and want to upgrade.

Remember also there is kit involved like, helmet, shoes, shorts, gloves...etc

Yes, the classified section here on bikehub is a great place to start looking amd you will soon see what you can get for that budget.

3k per person?

Yes, the classifieds part of this site

Okay, you guys are looking at recreational cycling. 26er's at that price. Nothing wrong with that, just 2 seconds slower when you're a pro...

Here's Shimano and SRAM hierarchy:

That Bergamot was probably an Acera or something spec, again, nothing wrong with that, and for your use perfectly fine, I got a tourney group to shift nearly as good as an X9 once, so perfectly rideable...

If possible, up the budget, if not, at least try to get something from a big(ger) brand with disk brakes, as one day, when you start cycling a bit more seriously, you'll want to upgrade...

And, whatever you do, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy a makro or game bike. Ever.

I wouldn't even consider buying new at that price point either, because you're going to get a better bike secondhand.

You can also look on OLX, sometimes there are bargains, but beware, do not be gullible, especially on OLX, as there are a lot of scammers about there...

Spotted in the classifieds: https://www.olx.co.za/ad/silverback-26-mtb-ID167zzZ.html#bc8b3e7670

And that's about as good as it gets at the price, but there's no reason you can't enjoy cycling with a bike like that. Both these are probably a better bikes than the Bergamot, and with very decent and trailworthy specs too. You'll be riding it for years...

My 2c...

Welcome to cycling dude!

It is very unlikely that you will get a used Bergamont or anything similar for R3000. A bike such as that will go for double that on the used market.

There are bargains to be had out there, but...the problem is you need to be able to tell the difference between a bargain and a lemon.
