Shimano hierarchy - what is "Deore XT"?

So as I understand it, Shimano hierarchy goes Deore - SLX - XT - XTR

However, I see derailleurs that are "Deore XT" and today I say a chain labelled "XTR / Deore XT / SLX"

How do the model names work?

The individual series are named

AA - M - XXXX

AA is the part type and the XXXX indicates the model

e.g.

SL-M9050 is the Di2 XTR shifter

SL-M8000 is the XT shifter

SL-M7000 is the SLX shifter

10 spd parts only have 3 digits e.g.
SL-M785 XT shifter
SL-M670 SLX shifter

Deore is the top series of Shimano MTB components. It has 4 levels:

base = Deore

then :

SLX

XT

XTR

All Deore stuff is decent and has a somewhat consistent feel in use but as you go up the range the componemts get lighter and more expensive. There is more use of exotic materials like stainless steel, titanium and more use of bearings in place of bushes. In some cases you get more functionality (e.g. XT and XTR shifters, brakes).

When you see XT, XTR and SLX on the packaging simultaneously it means that item can be used interchangeably. This would be the case e.g. for brake pads, chains, cables, brake hose etc.

And IMO unless you have your name stamped on your racing board, XT and SLX are more than you'll ever need!!

Just for the record, anyone can get a personalised board.
