2017 gut and distance

A bad day cycling still trumps a good day at the office.

Allow me some latitude here.

We are so privileged to be able to cycle (again). Many people know they ought to do it but don't. This is what I remind myself every day I push my bike out of the garage.

Been doing this (on and off) since 1978. Done way over 100 KKM and only fell 3 times. Been knocked off my bike once by a drunk and was able to cycle home. Done track cycling for many years and never fell on the track. I still enjoy cycling. Still get irritated if I plan to go cycling and something happens.

I feel more healthy than I have been for the past 16 years. First time below 98 kg in 15 or 16 years. Can't remember. Have done 3200km this year so far. Last time I did this was in 1998.

Cholesterol is normal. Blood suger is normal. Blood pressure 118 over 78. Resting pulse 50 some mornings.

Note to self. Don't ever stop cycling even if they have to put side wheels on the back when I am spared to do it when I am 90.

Sorry to have hi jacked your thread.

Enjoy every day you can be on your bike and thanks for inspiring me!!

Well put Johan !!

In 1999 I sold my bike when my knees konked in ...

2016 I loaned my neighbours bike and tried again .... bought a second hand bike and steadily got back into it.

I now commute a few days a week, when not away on business.  I also do some weekend rides with the 6 year old.

Clocked up about 1 000km this year.  Certainly less than most on this forum, but for me this is pure heaven to be mobile again !!

replaced the marshmallow (10 spd) chain with chain B as it got to 0.75 as per park tool recommendation...went for a ride...all seems well until i got down to the small gear on the cassette...it slipped...thought it might "wear in" ...thought i might need to take out another link...but when i went up to the big ring on the front...it still slipped...put the old chain back on...no slipping.

i did the same with the rattlin red rocket (11 spd) replaced with chain B as it got to 0.5...it felt like it was slipping but after calling a mate...i found the big ring had a bent tooth...sorted out the tooth...working...no issues.

lesson learnt...rather swop the chain at 0.5.

by the way...a cheap chain link removing pliers..makes it so much easier.

i got one like this which can open and close the link....they are cheap...or a circlip plier does the job just as well.

today i am looking out the sunny side of the bus...no need to eat the stress away...today i paid off every single outstanding debt ...and boy there were a lot...from outstanding sars which had been growing by the month ...dental bills...telkom ...loans...you name it ...all piling up and collect interest by the month...even a notification to attachment  my house ...some as old as 2015.

it feels like a huge burden has been lifted from my shoulders...as i sit here breathing out slowly releasing the negative energy...man it feels good.

other good news is that i am still under 100 kg ...which just makes me feel even lighter :)

have a good weekend :)

I have the same outlook today ", the sunny side of the street " .We are the importers of PMAT in SA and 18 months ago decided to make them locally . Much R & D went into this project as we could not get the formulation and procedure from the original manufacturer . Yesterday our first consignment can out the mold and we could start packaging and sending out stock .post-111826-0-13497200-1510905282_thumb.jpg

Well done. Sometimes life creeps up on you without knowing it.

Only when you are out of the grip do you realize what grip it had on you.

Correct , one gets entrenched with a supplier and you dont look further than the current $ price and how much you have to put the price up by to make a few Rand's . Now we do the whole industry a favour by local manufacture  , lower prices and more profit .

Good news...

I am still maintaining 99 kg.

I have enough work to keep me busy until January.

I am doing cross fit training and being paid for doing it ... I invested in a 6.5 m high scaffold tower and busy replacing lights with LED fittings and building cable trays in factories...on site by 6 and put in a good 12 hour session...climbing up and down the scaffold is a good work out... anyone keen to join me ...i wont even charge you ;)

The bad news...

no time to ride bicycle for a while.

battling to keep all my customers happy...just too much work at the moment...its a terrible cycle...i wish i could spread the work over the year...i know i could employ more people...unfortunately i am a bad manager...and watching people play on their phones and stand outside smoking doesnt do it for me...especially when i have to part with my hard earned money on paid days.

My neighbour is in the same line as you .....

Every so often he gets a BULK order to replace a LOT of lights in a warehouse ..... he has a friend or two that puts in leave at their normal place of work (proper leave), then he gets a cherry picker and they WORK long shifts ....  his buddies gets some GOOD money, and because he wraps up the job quicker he makes a tidy profit.

when working like that, there is no time for smoking or phones ....

97.8 kg...time to go shopping again...or get suspenders to hold my pants up...now fit comfortably into a large shirt...down from a 3 xl...plenty rags for site :)

what is and has always worked for me...weigh less eating diet/eating plan...if i stick to it like i have been...pack my lunch everyday and "only eat what is packed" ... the weight comes off.

the stress has changed...now i have an obligation to my customers to complete projects on time...the kind of stress i enjoy.

The beauty  about being so busy...i dont just just eat out of habit...one thing i do need to be careful of...not eating for long periods...come end of the day i shovel all the food...like last night i only ate at 10.30 pm when i got home from work...had a hectic busy day.

what is so cool if you live in Durban...last night i stopped as we were leaving the airport to watch the planes landing from the south...those massive planes coming in to land...literally just about your head...must be such a rush if you're stoned...think i should try that one night ...sit with a couple muffins and enjoy the view ;)

it seems doing my long ride is gona prove to be a challenge to find the time to prepare...hopefully the physical work will help.

Hang in there ....

Every month we meet work targets and dont put on weight is a GOOD month !

Long distance rides (the preparation etc) are a luxury .... a concept some wont understand ....

This week is better, previous three weeks I was all over the Country, from the Orange River to Diep Sloot .....  by the time you get home you are so sleep deprived ....

NICE to be back in office and being able to commute with the bike.  :)

Today is better than yesterday. Yesterday I was weighing more and a day away from my target for today.

How does the song go Today is yesterday's tomorrow. Today is so much better than this day a year ago.

Awesome to have today. Being able to ride is what makes today so much better. Last year I was not sure if I would be riding this year. Today I can look back and say I am better than last year.

Today is always the right day to do what it is you need to do...been meaning to setup a ride with a person who sent me a fb friend request a while back...he enjoyed cycling and always liked and commented on my page...we just haven't got around to meeting for that ride...got to work this afternoon ...got news that he passed away yesterday morning while cycling ...heart attack

15 min later I get a call from my wife...a mate was to be released from hospital in the morning...he passed away this evening.

Make that call....go visit that person or setup the ride before it is too late.

There is no material object on this earth worth more than a moment...a minute...an hour...a day spent with people who appreciate your time.

So how do you know when to stop...or slow down...cyclists' dropping from heart Attacks seems to becoming an issue...possibly because more middle aged over weight ballies are trying to loose weight...so they start cycling...I fall into this category...a fattie who decided to get off the couch and loose a kg or 2 while having some fun with my mates...but sometimes get a little carried away.

My concern is at what point do I stop or slow down...if I go by the rule of thumb...my hr should not exceed 172 bpm ...my avg hr today for a 2hr25 ride was 171 bpm and a max of 192 bpm .

Yesterday I decided to ease off the pedals when it hit 197 bpm .
