2017 gut and distance

Interesting reading these posts, I might be a bit late to the party though.

Took some advice from the other thread and went to see a dietitian about 5 few weeks ago. I got some good tips/advice and managed to go down from 117 kg to about 111 kg, it already feels like a big difference (especially on the climbs!). Getting new PR's up to the Saaltjie every last few rides (at least the new singletrack down from there gives me motivation to drag myself up there).

I'm not following a strict diet but trying to cut out snacks etc. and eat smaller portions, the following changes has also helped me:

- One low GI sandwich with lean meat (tuna etc.) instead of my previous two ham and cheese sandwiches (way less fat).

- An afternoon snack (yoghurt and fruit) at 15h00 helps to carry me through to dinner and stops the temptation for something less healty.

Long way to go and  a lot of discipline till I'm back to double figures but I reckon/hope I'll be there mid 2018!

You are doing it the right way with smaller portions and low GI foods . You might have seen my take on food intake for my weight loss . I cut out all white foods , bread , potatoes , rice and sugar in tea or cereals ,100grm of meat daily ( not every day ) with loads of vegies  and nothing that can be bought from a shop in cellophane   paper ( sweets , chips ect .) I eat 2 or 3 fruits a day  and take that as my sugar intake . Training i try do about 180km per week with some gym work on rainy days . I went from 124kg in July to 104 kg in 5 months .

I did my first midweek 45km Off road ride this morning with 3 other mates . We started at  The Parks Restuarant in Benoni and headed out towards Bredel and Bapsfontein through the fields . We encountered some muddy sections after the rains but were able to ride around them or just go slow to avoid falls ( hoked a 36 X 30 and rode through them . ) Some good climbs with lose rock to test my ability and fitness level but i rode them out  and felt good at the top . Some tricky sections along the Serengeti wall which i survived and i know some riders have fallen at or walked . We rode at an average of 21kph so i am pleased with my achievement . January when i hit the 99kg mark i would like to average 24kph on the same route .

Saturday is our Benoni BP get together ride . I managed to persuade Rick and Riaan and others to join us for a  6,30 start  ( Riaan overslept so missed out ) . The East Rand had a heavy rain storm on Friday evening but the weather prediction for today was clear . Rick joined us at the BP and we had not decided on the distance yet that normally is decided on the road  by weather , water ( mud ) # of riders and who takes the lead at the next junction to extend the the ride . The first +_ 25 km were rather wet and muddy but as we got further away from Benoni the route was dry and this is were the **** hit the fan because our leader was feeling good and took us towards the North through some uncharted territory . The way back the last 20 km was fairly flat on wide gravel road and our leader plus one other and myself treated this as a flat out race to the finish . I hung in there until the leader decided to go wait for two of the stragglers . Then only the two of us kept the pace high and headed for home , A most enjoyable ride with us all coming home covered in mud ,remnants of long grass and pieces of twigs stuck in the rear derailleur from our leaders wise chose of route ( Last time he road it , it had no cut down gum tree branches ) HAHA.

To wind up this thread for 2017...back on site from tomorrow till the 8 Jan. (phase 3 moving a factory)

still 98 kg...yip even after Christmas feasting...got up early opened presents...ate the chocolates which were given to me for Christmas (thought best to get them out the way ;) ) ...decided to work it off as the day went by...cut the grass after opening pressies...then moved a bank and back filled around the side of my garage...had lunch...after lunch out for a 30 km spin on the bike...then in the workshop to prepare equipment for site on Wednesday (staff on leave so i have to do it myself)

fitting comfortably into a size 36 and a large Tshirt.

did the boxing day ride today...can ride on the drops...legs still bump the gut a little...but much more comfortable...starting to feel the weight advantage of the rattlin red rocket.

failed with the long ride (160 km)...been working my butt off on site...no time to cycle...working long hours 7 days a week.

lesson i learnt from this year.......

if you want to loose weight...eat a balance healthy diet...one which works for you...not the one everyone else tells you works best for you...weigh less works for me...the percentage of commitment will directly affect the result.

cycling doesnt make me loose weight...but it helps me focus on my weight loss goals.

strava is not all bad...it is an awesome way to monitor your progress and help you to be better than you were yesterday.

if you want to ride a bicycle just to have fun and enjoy the good company...get out there and have fun.

if you want to ride to be better than yesterday...join a club...ride in the group which best suits your abilities...then work your way  to the front and move to the faster group...a cadence class or 2 also helps make you faster and hold the pain threshold a little longer.

wishing everyone the best for the new year...get those new years resolutions going and just keep going...dont give up...we only human and shyte (life) happens.

isetech wishing you all the best for 2018.

Trust you will reach you cycling goals, while managing a hectic work schedule.

was going to spend the mornings this week riding ... but ended on a drip at the doc after a night of vomiting and diahorea ..... slowly getting my strength back.

Good training really pays off . I started my training in my area in July on a 2,5 km circuit averaging about 7.5 min per lap at 20 kph ave. speed . Today i felt good and decided to push the max the whole 20. km and did a  43.11 min 20.5 km ride with an average of 28.5 kph . My next goal on this circuit is to do 20 km in a sub 40 min giving me a +_ average of 30kph . Im not sure as a 65 year old i should be aiming at but im getting fitter every week and able to ride longer distances . I do a once week 60 km plus ride with my mates through the Benoni / Bredel mealie fields and feel fine after that .

Gained 2 kg in spite of having my best month in 17 years. Did 600 km for December and played a lot of volleyball.

So I have scientifically proven (which I knew) that you cannot out train a bad diet.

Had a beer just about every day and some red wine and during the day we had lots of snacks which I washed down with Coke.

This fat is not going disappear without a fight. It is fighting back. My legs are in a good shape but the upper body is still a mess.

So I guess I will now have to join the 2018 weight loss challange. I am now 5 kg behind schedule.

Flip it it has to be done. I had enough of this. 19 kg of nonsense.

Johan just hang in there.

Every year you dont put on weight is a good year

Every year you do manage to loose a few kilos is a great year.

dont bother with weekly and monthly targets .... just consistently do the RIGHT STUFF (eat right and moderate exercise).  The weight will follow.

PS - I neglected my core-exercises, so the "boepie" is back even though the weight has not changed.  Steadily working this boepie away !!
