2015 Fox Factory CTD with Boost Valve shock

Hi Guys,

I used the have a Fox Evolution CTD no boost valve rear shock, came stock with my Giant Trance. Its "climb" setting was pretty stiff regardless of the pressure I set, only about 10%

Recently purchased the factory version of the same shock with the boost valve technology. It's "climb" setting is really plush, regardless of how hard I pump it. I only weigh 70kg but I still get quite a bit of "pedal bob" on climb mode, like up to 40% if I had to guess. Its still stiffer than Trail and Decent but nowhere near the stiffness I had on my Evolution version.

At first I thought, damn I bought a broken shock but I have now checked two other bikes on the trails with the same Factory version shock and their "climb" setting is also really plush??? Then I tough Ok, probably the boost valve technology making it a bit more plush that what I' used to... What is odd though it that my friend has a Performance series with boost valve on his Anthem, its climb setting is equally as stiff as the Evolution shock I had initially? There goes that theory! :/

Seems the Factory is plusher in climb mode than its smaller brothers Performance and Evolution? What is your experience on this?

Cheers

Jacques

There are two piston configurations on the pre-DPS Fox shocks - the boostvalve and the dish. The dish model is good at locking out and utterly crap at everything else, while the Boostvalve is far more active in the climb mode but overall performs far better.

Aside from that, as mentioned above, check that the tune is appropriate, and if you bought the shock second hand get it serviced. Far too often people blame the equipment when it's just poorly maintained.

Thanks guys! Pretty much what I figured. I got the shock second hand, Evolution CTD was crap! How do you know what tune it is? I know the basics like LV and BV, spacer... This is the printout from the tuning code:

2015, FLOAT-K F-S, CTD-Adj BV LV, Santa Cruz, Furtado/5010, 7.875, 2.000, 0.8 Spacer, VTL, RTL, 200, 16

Old

2014, FLOAT-A E-S, CTD SV, Giant, Trance 27.5 1/2/SX/Intrigue 1, 7.875, 2.000, 0.2 Spacer, CM, Climb F

I'm not 100% sure but I'll give it a shot.

BV: Boost Valve.

LV: Large Volume.

Santa Cruz, Furtado/5010: The bike the shock was tuned for.

7.874: Eye to eye.

2.000: Stroke.

0.8 Spacer: Air spring volume spacer size.

VLT: Velocity(Compression) tune low.

RTL: Rebound tune low.

200: Boost valve pressure in psi.

16:?

Yeah, then it's definitely the wrong tune for the bike.

5010 is a 125mm bike, and has a lower leverage ratio than the giant, as well as different progression curve which means it doesn't need as much compression damping as the Giant.

You can fix it by getting a custom tune in the new facilities in PE (Pushed afaik) who will give you custom valving / shim stack for your particular circumstances. I'd recommend this, tbh. It'll have a service at the same time.

Essentially it's a LIGHT / LOW compression tune, where the Trance needs a Medium compression tune.

It may also be exacerbated by it needing a service, but it needs a re-tune to get it working optimally.

Or... you could buy my monarch plus 200x57 and get your rear travel up to ~157mm at the same time

:P

I'm actually also considering selling mine - love it, just feel like I'm not doing it justice!

Spot on.

Cheers gents! Will have a look around. Either different shock or do the PUSH tune... :)

I can do the Fox tune for you if you like, will work out way cheaper than the Push - but that's your call.
