There's a compatibility chart here - http://www.slowtwitch.com/Tech/Cassette_Spacers_2013_3978.html. Basically says the Shimano and SRAM 9/10 freebody will not support an 11 sp cassette.

For the record I did a 1x10 upgrade and I'm very happy with it.

Also (according to velonews) for some wheelsets if you can't get an 11sp shimano freebody you can apparently combine a campy freebody with a campy 11sp cluster in the shimano 11s drive train. http://www.velonews.com/2013/09/bikes-and-tech/technical-faq/technical-faq-drivetrain-compatibility-for-10-and-11-speed_301392

If you order everything from Wiggle(XT Rear derailleur, XT shifters, XT 11-42 cassette, and XT chain) It will cost you just about 3k. That's with the free shipping and 10$ off assuming you buy there for the first time. KMC chains are out of stock, otherwise that's another 12$ saving...

My Wiggle order arrived exactly seven days after I placed my order. It arrived by courier, and I checked 'stndard tracked shipping'

Add R500 for a Rapide N/W and it's a done deal.

PS, I didn't pay any taxes on my goodies

Neither.

If he's on 9 speed at the moment, it means it's a shimano freehub which can take 11 speed cassettes from Shimano & Praxis & Sunrace, as well as the NX SRAM Cassette.

It's the SRAM Eagle & 11 speed cassettes that you need to worry about.

Myles, how do you know all this shyte?

Are you moonlighting in an illegal LBS that trades next door to a brothel?

this is going to be an upgrade of note compared to 3x9

why ? 3x9 =27 ways to suffer.... 1 x 11 is ONLY 11 ways to suffer ?

A side note...

I am going the 2x10 route.  But one thing that I can't get an answer on is:

Will my old from the 3x9 work on the 2x10 or the 1x11?

I think I have an XT BB (can be wrong here, but think I replaced it last year with an XT BB) that worked with my 3x9.  I have a 2x10 BB, but would still like to use my 3x9 BB as I am to lazy to search for the BB tool to remove the BB again.
