Stone chip on Fox shock

After just having my fork and shock serviced, I went for a ride yesterday and when washing my bike, the shock has picked up a deep chip in the shaft.

Where is the best place to get a replacement shaft, and what would a fair price be for the full replacement job (I don't have the skills/tools to disassemble and reassemble the shock)?

Has anyone used the shock covers that look like expandable boots, and were they worth it or just a PITA?

Fork or rear shock?

I am assuming the fork - the boots are a real pita - if it's the fork stanchion with a ding - you might want to see if it leaks oil/water before deciding to replace - they are lethally expensive.

I normally use Mikes Bikes in Greenside or Jason at the Trailhead for this kind of thing - both good shops.

Fox in SA only have a Kashima-coated air can in stock, and it's around R2800 to replace the can, gas it, etc. etc. A new shock is around R8500  locally.

The code on my shock is CDSQ. If I were to buy another shock with same mounting style/eyelet to eyelet measurement/physical dimensions/etc with a different tune/build code, what is a fair price to have it tuned to the same spec? And who in Gauteng would you recommend?

If I'm understanding you correctly, the part you're looking for isn't the air can, it's the damper body.

Not super pricey, but the labour to fit is not cheap since you've got to disassemble and re-bleed the entire shock.

Thanks for everyone's advice, I sent the shock to Robbies Bicycle Concept in PE, not because of him being better or anything, but because his website had all the relevant info I needed (parts description and price with pictures :) ) and also gave off quite a good vibe.

I sent the shock down with their courier, Internet Express, last Wednesday and had an email back on Thursday confirming the repair, and then one on Friday saying all done and dusted. I had gone to Germany last Wednesday, so this was all quite cool! When I got to the office this morning, the shock was already back, having being delivered on Friday.

Anybody experiences this chip, it will cost you around R1800 to change from the normal anodised body to the Kashima body, with a service (including nitrogen recharge). A lot cheaper than R2800 for an aircan (like I was quoted, for completely the wrong fkn part :( ) or R8500 for a new shock from the F@#$%^^X agents.
