Need advice! Getting screwed by local hubber

Hi Guys - I need some advice on how to get this sorted out.

I bought a set of wheels advertised as "11 speed / 10 speed with spacer" from a local hubber (with fairly good rep) beginning of January. I was prepping for 70.3, so was a bit rushed and as the wheels arrived via courier I sent them direct to my LBS to get new tubbies fitted. Anyways, it turns out that a few days after getting them back from the shop I discovered they were actually 10 speed only.... grrrr.

Obviously I got back in touch with the seller and after lots of back-and-forth sending photos and measurements he conceded that he had made a mistake and actually was "selling them for a friend who had told him they were 11 speed". I suggested that I remove the new tubbies and return them for a full refund. He responded a few days later with a long whatsapp full of excuses about how his friend has now "spent all the money" and won't be able to refund me, and that he suggests that I just list them again on classifieds and try to sell them to get my money back.

I've refused this - because the price I paid is probably too high for 10 speed wheels - and why should I be stuck with this problem? I've simply been screwed over here.

I've offered to return the wheels for a full-refund, also offered to be refunded a partial amount to cover a replacement 11 speed hub - and at this stage he has stopped replying to my whatsapps...

Any advice from anyone thats been in a similar situation? I've only ever had good experiences with buying and selling on the hub and believe the reputations for people should speak for themselves.

Hello Tom.

You need to stand your ground here, accept no compromises.

If they are advertised as "11 speed / 10 speed with spacer" , and did not perform as such,

you need to send them back for a full refund.

Irrespective whether its seller acting for buddy or not.

You don't come into this equation.

Please name the seller too

So I can be aware in any potential future dealings

Well, before "flaming" the guy, lets see if he makes good first!

That's whats important.

Can you not just put an 11 speed freehub on ??

If possible get the seller to foot that bill . You will still have the wheels you wanted .

Don't think anyone has an interest to flame the fella. Just a bit of early warning.

And just remember, there are three sides to every tale. Judge pe3nguin does not believe this one is cut and dry. I will release my verdict upon further findings.

Do you have any other contact information of the seller? Or any other identification?

Is it possible to request the original ad that was placed? Perhaps admin can assist.

advice, but some what not related to being screwed...

if you want to see this as school fees, then take the wheels to your local engineering shop, they can machine off i think its like 1-2mm off the freehub to be able to fit the 11 speed cassette, I know quite a few guys doing this with older zipp wheels with success.
