Wow - the % of cycle Deaths in the Netherlands 2014 seems very high - its all about perception I suppose. But then there are far more cyclist on the road in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands had 185 cycle death with a population of about 17 million then for a starting point we in RSA should hopefully have no more than 600 ( I think we are less - well hoping, but not sure on the non sport / commuter stats) for a population of 55 million. For other motorist in RSA if were as safe a the Netherlands in a year it would be about 1250 - think that our XMAS death toll not the full year.

It may be way safer to ride a bicycle in RSA relative to been in a car compared to the Netherlands stats! I will try and find RSA stats this week.

"Of the 570 road traffic deaths recorded in the Netherlands in 2014, 185 involved cyclists and cyclists also accounted for half of those seriously injured. ‘This does illustrate that if we want to reduce the number of road deaths, much more attention needs to be paid to cyclists,’ Van Boggelen told the paper.

Also found this stat but it is also very interresting just to look at it.

I think to do a direct compare between SA and EU countries is going to be very very difficult.  You really are gonna have to have very detailed stats before one can make propper deductions/assumptions from it.

Factors that come into play.

  • I think number of sport cyclists is much more in Europe than in SA
  • The number of commuters is huge compared to SA
  • Although the population of Germany is more than SA, yet Germany is smaller than SA, but Germany might have more roads than SA.
  • The number of people rather commuting by public transport than by car is far greater than SA.
  • Germany being part of the EU has loads of traffic from other EU countries which add to the traffic volumes compared to SA which does not have as much traffic from other countries.
  • Then off course there is simply no comparison between the number of cycling paths in Germany compared to SA

Like I mentioned in a previous post, the best way is to have bolards or kerbs etc. This is my opinion and not shared by alot. However I just decided to have a look at some of the lanes around the world and, all the cyclists are "protected" from traffic in some way.

There is even a pic of a cycle car free highway.

Edit- forgot to mention though that are just as many with out any form of saftey barriers

Surely this can be done on our boards or even adopt a similar system on sections with heavy bicycle traffic, especially hot spots and weekend favorite routes

Absolutely.

That pic though.... badly executed good idea.

That pic looks very much like Germany.

Looks like a perfectly usable taxi lane if you ask me.

Cycle lanes will only be effective if we can keep taxis and the entitled law breakers off of them.

So with the lanes, we will need policing.

How good are lanes for the "sports cyclists"? Makes perfect sense for commuters, but doing 20 x 40s on cycle lanes? Hmmmm
