Help - Bike needed for Argus ride

Probably a long shot I know, but I'm from the UK and I am coming to SA on holiday and have booked a place on the Cape Argus ride on March 12th.

I had intended bringing my own bike, but KLM are being really difficult, and all of the hire shops unsurprisingly had their bikes booked out months ago.

Does anyone have a spare road bike the would lend/hire to me for the ride -ideally 56cm or 58cm frame in decent condition. I'm staying in Cape Town from the 6th until the ride, but leaving straight after the ride for the rest of the holiday

Any help/advice gratefully received

Mike

Happy to provide reasonable security deposit. Usually if I rent a bike a credit card deposit is taken and refunded - might be harder for a private rental, but if you can suggest something that would be secure for both of us I'd be happy. I could prove my ID with Passport and Address with Driving License

Problem with KLM is partly, 23kg weight limit (My bike box is 14kg and bike is 10KG), but more to do with the fact that I have through ticketing including internal flights with other airlines that is making pre-approval for excess damage difficult

Duane - thanks for the offer.I'll let you know if I can't find something more suitable

Come on people of the fair cape, surely someone has something to help this guy out?

@flanker55 are you wanting something that you can ride with quite competitively or are you just coming for the experience and a more social ride? If the latter then maybe someone even has an older commuter/mountain bike they can lend to you (I borrowed a mountain bike when I went down for the Argus).

Hi Mike,

I think my dad has a bike we hired out to another UK hubber at the end of last year. A Giant TCR with Ultegra and Cosmic wheels.

How long will you be out here for, are you just planning to cycle just the day of the Argus? - I see, the week.

Let me chat to the old man and see what we can do.

Do you know where you are staying in Cape Town? This makes the dorp off etc a little trickier.

Thanks for the new posts.

Savage - that would be great if possible. I'm staying in Great Victoria St near the Planetarium. Happy to Private Message you my contact details if you need more info

I have managed to find a mountain bike as a last resort but I'd much prefer a road bike if possible. Having said that at the age of 61 I'm no boy racer!!!

Phew, that was close. the handle flanker55 suggests a rugby connection. Thought maybe you had a connection to english rugby (which is not the UK & Irish Lions) - then again, you could be Welsh, Scottish or Irish. Your are all bad! Then I see the number 61, so you are safe. Hang on, maybe you have tickets ? In which case, you are not all bad.

If you dont come right, I am sure we can make a plan although our bikes are all size medium 54 -56 ish.

Maybe some other hubbers will come to the party with a bigger size.

Slowbee - 56 would be perfect, 54 would be Ok - I'd be happy with either if you could help

Confession time. The flanker55 handle does reflect my love of rugby, and yes I'm English as well so beyond redemption. Having said that my first allegiance is to club rugby (Bath) and not the National team.

Savage - any update from your dad

Sorry if this sounds like nagging, but I'm desperate to get this tied down as soon as possible

Really grateful for the response of all hubbers

For interest sake.. How much is a rental company charging for a bike for a person for the time you are here...

The problem is there are zero bikes for rent at these peak periods. It's like R850 a day.

I have an old GT series 2 with 105 components you can use. It is my normal ride but I am way over the CTCT so not riding it.

If you don't come right you can use it, just give me a heads up as I would need to give it a service before hand and you would need to bring your own pedals.

Still 53/39 12/25 ratios.
