That dirt road really caught me by surprise and combined with the crosswind I was getting blown off the road. Lost the (breakaway) bunch and had 20km solo TT to the finish

The bunch ....

a lot of water bottles pop out as you came of the gravel onto the tar, but somene also lost something other then a water bottle....

I picked it up and if you can tell me what you lost at that spot, you can have it back. :-)

My third ever road race in as many weeks. Hardest one yet.

Started in K (50 bucks to reseed is a bit steep IMO) along with H, I and J and the first few clicks to the bottom of the climb up to Hillcrest were blisteringly fast by my standards - averaging about 35kph. The climb split us into three groups - some fast guys went off at top speed, including one kind but cheeky young skinny 20 something oke who put a hand on my back as he went sailing past. His mate suggested he shouldn't be a d1ck but I wanted to know why he didn't keep pushing me up the hill.

Our little group gathered numbers from somewhere, including a guy in a Pure Savage shirt (he wasn't shy to take his turn on the front), a C rider who didn't look like he wanted to be dropped by us lowly okes and picked up his pace, a skinny guy in red shoes who kept hollering for the group to stay together as he pumped past everyone to solo for 10 minutes before dropping back to cheer us all on and then take off again and a good rider in a "Alpe d'huez" shirt that I recognised from the Boeckaert Sonnen.

We flew along at a good pace and I felt very optimistic about beating all previous times.

It all went horribly wrong at the dirt - our group which had co-operated well until then fell apart completely. Some went charging off ahead, others were left behind. I careened off the dirt back onto the tar with the bike making more of the decisions about where to go than I was just in time to be dropped by the main body of HIJK as we went up Malanshoogte - very frustrating. I could see them for a long time just 300 meters or so ahead and gradually pulling away up the hill.

From there it was every man and his granny for himself for me and the stragglers of the short route who were toiling away up the hill. At the Hoogekraal 4 way stop I caught sight of a pair of green socks I recognised from the halcyon moments I had spent with the the group and I laboured up the hill, hypnotised by the lumo-green-up-and-down and eventually caught him as we got to Burgundy.

We exchanged horror stories about how we got dropped and took turns very nicely into the horrible wind until Koeberg road where he declared himself finished and I got a second wind to finish a good dozen or so places ahead of the 50th percentile at an average speed of 28,4.

I bumped into Alpe de Huez guy at the finish and he said he was a part of a two man group up Conties so I reckon the group pretty much fell apart soon after I lost them anyway.

Or so I console myself. I don't know what happened to red shoes or Pure Savage. These peletons are short lived alliances it seems.
