Got myself an Argus substitution, so I'll only get my start time 3rd of march...

947 times have an influence on seeding for the Argus if you do it in less than 5h apparently. I did 2016 947 in 3:23, so anybody got any idea what time I'll start the A? Never done it before

Based on similar time i did previous you should get around L/M start, at least that what it was called but CT been different the groups are called something else.

3:23 947 should get you a reasonable start time.

That said, there are other factors like times at other races, various weighting applied etc.

I'd guess around 7:00 start.

On the CTCT thread pure savage posted the start times. Also a few guys have posted times and groups there. Might get more insight there.

Also, newbie question #437: Will a sub4 argus be doable judging off 947 time and fitness level? Depends on the wind and bla bla but generally?

Most likely ????

What group did you do that 947 time from?

Did you stay with the group till the end? If not where did they drop you?

Group n. Didn't stay with the group at all, went solo the whole thing.

Group n is al the wannabe mamils remember...

I finished 30something of the group

Thing about the Argus is, and especially if its windy, STAY WITH YOUR GROUP. The first half of the race can be brutal and if you aiming for a goal time and keep dropping groups, That time in between groups will break you. The start is pretty much a gradual climb till hospital hill. So if climbing is your weak point then you need to dig deep. Its not a serious climb and most won't struggle if they seeded properly. Then your first real tester will be Edinburgh drive. Short and sharp. From there is a fast cruise onto the blue route and then a very scenic tempo ride on main road along the coast. Then comes your next tester, Smitswinkel. Again, dig deep and the reward afterwards passed cape point is fast(About half way here). If you have dropped off up smits, work hard to catch the group because you will need them for the section where you turn right towards sun valley(Not necessarily because of wind but its just a open lonely road). Then its chappies. Here you can either decide to bleed to make your goal or say stuff this I will chill the rest of the way and take in the amazing scenery up chappies and the world tour vibe up suikerbossie(I kid you not, All you gotta do to feel like Froome is run up there in your cleats).

If you decide to bleed then just get into a tempo and stick with it. Chappies is long. You get the first part which is over quickly and has a small decent. Then you climb and twist your way up through sun and shadow with some of the worlds greatest views to your left. You go under a roof built to protect you from rocks, you go passed massive nets put in place to catch falling boulders. You might even see a section with some water and moss seeping from a crack in the mountain. If you are really lucky you may even see whales or dolphins. The decent is tricky with a few camber changes in the road and as you approach the toll gate, pick your line and stick to it. Don,t change unless you absolutely have to. Onto suikerbossie, Its going to be hot, its going to be hard but once your at the top and you hear the dude ringing that bell you know its all down hill till greenpoint. the final few km from the traffic circle to the finish line it fast, so concentrate and ride smart. Don't want to crash here with just minutes left.

I could go on all day about the best race ever but these are just a few quick tips to try help. These of course would only really apply to the more "racy" groups. At the back end of the race its one long mass of riders but you should be ahead of that.
