This looks great. But at 750 grams its only 200 grams lighter than my fullface. While its a significant improvement for something you wear on your head. A 200 gram saving is hardly enough for it to be touted as an all day climb friendly full face. Not when its STILL double the weight of any half lid.

And at R5,400? I'd rather have the versatility of a convertible lid.

Agreed, but here's what I don't understand:

 

Fox MSRP US$249 = ~R3250

 

R3250 + 25% Duty + 14% VAT + 10% SARS = R4688

 

This is still R700 cheaper than buying it locally. Surely the SA wholesaler doesn't buy these at recommended retail price from Fox?

Launch special is R4500 if that counts. Bicycle stuff isn't cheap in ZA.

How many R700's do you need to make to pay for warehousing, warranty, carrying stock, staff, advertising, taxes, electricity, etc, etc, etc.

Re-calculate using the cost price the wholesaler pays and that R700 probably triples. However, I understand they don't sell thousands of these and have all the above you mentioned to pay for.

 

Edit: Just had a thought on supporting/buying local vs buying from overseas. Hypothetically speaking what if everything was priced here the same as what it would cost to import? Everyone would buy local, local market will do better, more entrants into the market bringing in products that aren't currently available in SA. I should probably stop dreaming now.
