Hi All

Maybe somebody can help?

I am considering getting one of these contraptions to clean chains and cassettes mostly but for other things as well.

Do they clean properly?

I think the cost would perhaps offset replacing chains too often?

Are they big enough to take a whole cassette?

Anybody using one and could offer some advice?

Many thanks.

An ultrasonic cleaner?

If that is what you mean then they work extremely well at cleaning things - with the right solvent/solution in them.

For chains - the one problem is that they work almost too well - and you really have to soak the chain in lube for a while after cleaning to get the pins re-lubricated properly - if you don't do this then the chains lifespan is shorter rather than lengthened.

You could also try soaking the chain in melted paraffin wax for about 20 min... it will be clean and lubricated after that - just make sure it is a little raised off the bottom of the container when soaking.

Yip, Ultrasonic cleaner.  Is there a type you could perhaps suggest?

I did do a search and it was not too conclusive as to what brand/make is acceptable.

Any input would be great.

I have contacted Nuclean as they seem to make them up depending on requirements

Thanks Doc.

I can't really give you any good advice on a make, except to say make sure the bowl is big enough to clean what you need, and that it's made of thick enough stainless - there is somw wear on it from hard parts, and can apparently wear through from hard use - I have my dad's one out of his practice when he shut up shop a few years a go - a quality device... should be able to give that to my kids in my estate.... :)

Personally I think you would get more use out of a small parts washer with a pump and brush than an ultrasonic cleaner - why not try the melted paraffin wax treatment first... it works really well.

How dirty do your chains get that you have to resort to a ultrasonic cleaner?! A little degreaser and some elbow grease is all that's necessary to get a chain clean.

As I mentioned, for other things as well - dive equipment, microscope parts, underwater camera equipment, tools used under salt water and so on.  My chains are usually clean but to be honest, it requires a lot of labour to keep them that way.  looking at an easier way out.

I think this unit may do the trick.  (Clean bike parts is a bonus)

There is a difference between clean enough and clean.....

Clean a chain as clean as you can get it with elbow grease and then give it to me - you will be amazed how much dirt comes out using the ultrasonic cleaner....
