For those that haven't been following, it is Expedition Guarani in Paraguay.

And the South African team of Cyanosis is hauling, they lead for the first 2 legs, were briefly passed on the 3rd leg, but now Nic is navigating on rails where every over team is struggling to find certain checkpoints and they have pulled a massive lead as the day has progressed.

Live tracking is here- http://5.135.182.179:8080/NonStop/ExpedicionGuarani17/index.html

if you turn the tracks on in op right corner you can see how badly most of the field is running around in circles.

Cyanosis Breaks the Field

Course Manager Urtzi Inglesias warned teams that the 54km trek on Leg 4 could be the most difficult of the AR World Series Qualifying race, Expedición Guaraní, and his words were prophetic.

Through the first three legs of the race the field had raced relatively close to together and the top two teams, South Africa Cyanosis and Spain Euskat Raidaventura.org even started this leg 4 at the same time. It was Cyanosis however who broke the field with exemplary navigation and a sustainable pace.

Clinton Mackintosh said “the heat is stifling and it is so hard to move, you just cant go any quicker and we still have a long way to go”. They were obviously moving a lot quicker than the rest of the field completing the leg in 28 hours and putting an incredible 10 hour gap to the chase group.

CP27 and CP28 seemed to cause the most problems for teams and this can be seen to great effect in the track files. The red dots represent the two CPs and the coloured lines show the routes taken by teams. For reference, an easy checkpoint to navigate to would likely see one single band of lines moving through the control.

An outstanding performance by team Spain Raidaran Trangoworld on this leg has seen them move into second place of the entire race. This is an incredible comeback as on the first leg they were unluckily allocated a defective kayak and finished the leg in second last position. Since then they have consistently moved through the field and began Leg 4 in 6th position.

The Swedish team of Naturkompaniet Pioneers are one of two teams to be short coursed. Illness and sunburn slowed them and they were no longer able to beat the cutoff to start the Leg 4 trek.

To see if Raidaran Trangoworld can close the gap to Cyanosis, head to http://www.expedicionguarani.com to “Watch the Dots”.

Looks like they are really starting to get going on leg 5 another big cycle leg, according to the cp times they were 17 hours ahead at cp36 and are building up some good pace on the cycle now with a big big paddle after that which I think they are all gonna be looking forward to getting off their feet a bit.

Cyanosis arrived at TA4 in 57 hours.   The race has now been going for 73 hours and the second placed team has at least another hour to get into the TA.  The Cyanosis lead is therefore about 16 to 17 hours at the moment.  Way to go!

The South African team Cyanosis delivered a powerful victory at the AR World Series Qualifier Expedición Guaraní in Paraguay. Winning a prized qualification spot to the AR World Championship in August. Clinton Mackintosh, Nicholas Mulder, Susan Carter-Brown and Rob Crichton dominated the race winning in 106 hours and 52 minutes.

Standing on the finish line tears welled in Rob Crichton’s eyes. He said “I’m pretty emotional right now. Our team pulled together and held strong the whole race”. Clinton Mackintosh said “That last paddle was fantastic. I really enjoyed the long expedition legs and Nic had flawless navigation the whole way”.

Arriving in second 10 hours and 26 minutes behind Cyanosis was the Brazillian team Nossa Vida comprising Jonas Junckes, Pedro Pinheiro, Diogo De Sordi and Leticia Morro. Pedro said “My team was great together and 2nd feels like victory to me”.

It just wasn’t the race that last years winners and world ranked number 2 Columbia Vidaraid had hoped for. They had to cope with numerous set backs including difficulties with the heat, navigational mistakes and a time penalty for leaving their tracking device in a transition area. Finishing in third place 14 minutes behind second Nick Gracie said “I definitely had some rough parts in that race”. Sarah Fairmaid said “That last leg was brilliant, we just raced it. It felt good and there was no dawdling, we almost caught them [Nossa Vida]”.

For the rest of the field thankfully the heat wave broke with scattered showers and cloudy conditions. Race Director Gustavo Borgognon said “The race has been a great success and I have been able to show the racers some of the friendly people and beautiful landscapes of my home”.

Now that Expedición Guaraní has concluded the attention will turn to the next Qualifier on the AR World Series calendar, Huarasinchi in Ecuador from 27 April - 3 May.
