Bikepacking western cape

Hey Guys

I have been doing a bit of touring cycling lately and I've been wanting to make the transition from roads to mountains

Does anyone know of some good 1 to 2 night bikepacking trails just outside of cape town to get started off on?

Will a 26er all mountain bike suffice for these kind of trips?

Will really appreciate the help

Ceres to Calvinia along the dirt road is something I'm keen to try, got to figure out a way back afterwards. Probably a 4 day trip though.

An all-mountain bike should work fine if it has enough gearing, and if its setup to allow comfortable pedalling.

That could be an option, i was thinking more single track stuff along hiking routes, i stumbled upon a nice one in hottentots nature reserve the other day

The all mountain (2007 mongoose teocalli) could work, thinking of investing in a 29er but they are all so very expensive

we did - start at Jamaka campsite, head north towards Clanwilliam, up the Pakhuis pass, down the old wagon trail towards Heuningvlei where we stayed with a local (can accommodate 8 peeps) who gave us dinner and beer (which we had pre-ordered). Next day back to Jamaka via Sandrif (Cederberg) single tracks.

Day 1 - 75km

Day 2 - 90km

Last year we did -

Clanwilliam - Sanddrif (+ 1 day on their trails) - Wuppertal - back to Clanwilliam. Was mostly dirt road but a rad ride all round.

We took it chilled so did one stop per night but can easily do that whole route in 2-3 days

The heavier the bike gets with panniers and all, the better you'll feel riding a 26".

Smaller wheels are better equipped to deal with heavy weight.

I was thinking of leaving the panniers for my road setup, and shifting to saddle / frame bag. Do you have experience with these?

I do not, sorry.  I am speaking from experience with riding a 26" as a commuter bike and quite often having a heavy back pack. I was interested in getting panniers for the fork and having all my goodies on the front of the bike for small over night treks.
