How to Train for Maluti Double 90

Hi Guys,

I have spoken to my uncle who is a very seasoned rider and has participated in this race twice I think, and said I wanted to try this race maybe next year.

So this is what I can and can't do.

Longest rides so far: 103km @ 500m+ elevation.

Avg speed over that distance: 25km/h

I have trained on that specific roads inside Golden Gate now so I know what the route kind of looks like.

But I am not a very good climber. I have not managed to finish SBR before because the first time I got lost and took the wrong turn off and the second time fell my ass off on the MTB. SBR is close to where I stay so I think that will be my best option for Hill training.

Would it be possible to train for that race in one year's time? My aim is just to be able to finish it, not put up crazy times. But I also want to be realistic and not make an idiot of myself.

Just remember that Maluti Dbl 90 is a team TT so you'll need some friends.

I think it's very manageable if you want to start training for Maluti 2018 now.

Build a good base and then go from there.

You'll need to do some long rides, go from 100km and build to 200km

Do SBR once a month and if you really keen do a double lap next year Feb (or so)

It will also depend on how often you ride.

If you can get 3 -4 rides in a week it will help.

Ride through winter even if it's indoors to keep the legs spinning.

Also do some race when summer comes back, those hard sessions will definitely help.

Like I posted in the Maluti post, the 94.7 race is harder if compared to the first 130km of Maluti.

Most important, have fun !!!!

I try and ride 4 times a week and put on average about 180-200km per week. Through the winter I will carry on riding on my IDT.

I know of the team members, but the team I will be riding with is a bit stronger than what I am, so I don't want to drag them down. But since we can't train together during the week it will be up to me to build myself.

180-200 km a week is more than enough to build from. You should be able to build from there in 4 months.

Ride with your faster team mates once a week and try and hang in as long as you can. You will soon improve and be able to sit with them for the ride.

Don't just ride through winter. Get a (free) training plan focussed on building a solid base and try and lose weight. Personally, I'd not go back to SBR until I had put sufficient base training in to manage a whole lap. It will be very motivating.

TITS-Time In The Saddle.

This was only the second time the race was held so your uncle has done all of them. If you are not "racing" it then the first 130 odd km till golden gate is not that difficult.

Since you have never actually done that distance I would recommend you have to at least do 180plus before the race. I had done Jock and Kremetart before Maluti so for last years training I never actually did more than a 150km training ride but I know what its like to ride/race for that long.

SBR would be good for the golden gate section.

It's a lekker race, So find yourself 11 mates and go have fun.
