Thanks for following through. I was sure I'd seen it happen on the smaller cogs before.

I am sure I have put it on wrong before... but maybe I figured it out halfway and didn't quite get it on - going to have to try- good catch Ben

Had the same problem, and no it not a real back pedal, just that transition between pedal and not pedaling, well for me anyway . My LBS eventually found that I had somehow bent my cassette, don't ask how because I don't know, but well it is, eventually it started to cause the chain being kicked off! bought a new cassette and voila no more problem.

This is my problem.

The cassette is however a special import :-(. So changing it will be a financial pain. I wont go in to cluster sizes etc as the thin race snakes who lurk on the hub will notice that it is bigger than 28 teeth and will besmirch my name for riding big clusters.

Remember that there are cyclists of the clydesdale persuasion out there.

I am leaning towards this being a bum cassette but am reluctant to change it as i need the extra couple of teeth it brings without doing a massive groupset upgrade.

Stick your bike on a workstand, slowly backpedal and check if the chain is catching on any of the ramped teeth. Attack with file.
