popcorn_skollie Posted May 15, 2017 Share only problem right now is trying to get cheap shoestried cleats on on my friends trance,it was way to easy the get the bike sideways and go over stuff faster, then we stuck em on my canyon,i hit a tree so hard it left a mark of my stemi could go through stuff faster, faster than i could go... What size are you?Have an old pair of Answers in size 42 you could have. They pretty scuffed up but still have some good milage left in em. cdevil Posted May 15, 2017 Share Damn, 12 posts deep and not a single "OMFG FLAT PEDALS CLIMB JUST AS GOOD AND BETTER THAN CLIPLESS!!!! REEEEE" I'm impressed. I've tried both, there's no difference between the two on climbs. In technical single track climbs flats require a bit more skill, but both require the same effort to get to the top. BigDL

popcorn_skollie Posted May 15, 2017 Share Yeah. Except you're wrong. He's right.  I've pedaled uphill on flats before. I was always the last to the top. Then I tried cleats. And I was still the last to the top. You can't argue with science man.

If Flats were faster chris froome would have them on his TT bike. Edited May 15, 2017 by Duane_Bosch
Psyrax Posted May 15, 2017 Share Don't worry about flats or clips. 29er DH bikes are coming soon for the us weekend warriors and the way its going now even bigger wheels in the futur, then no one will have to pedal ever and they only have to give you a slight push on the top of the hill and you will glide over anything. popcorn_skollie

Ride Rate Review Posted May 15, 2017 Share My mtb career : Start flatsMoved to clipless Back to flatsBack to cliplessNow Back to flatsUntil I ride clipless again They are both great and both have advantages and disadvantages. Although I love clipless and that "part of the bike" feeling, it's nice to switch out and get a different feeling on the bike, at the moment I'm getting prepped for some rather muddy conditions where clipless shoes have a real bad weakness at the moment. cdevil Posted May 15, 2017 Share Yeah. Except you're wrong. Thanks for the explanation, but it takes the same amount of energy (kilojoules) to pedal to the top.

If Flats were faster chris froome would have them on his TT bike. The same rider on the same bike riding up the same hill (assuming flats and clipless pedals weigh the same) will burn exactly the same amount of energy when using either flats or clipless. Clipless is advantageous in XC/Road/TT as the rider can divide the leg work (quads/hamstrings) more evenly. For DH its obviously more convenient being attached to the bike through the rough sections, but Sam Hill has had plenty of podium finishes on flats over the years. Ride what you want, I personally have more fun on flats.
