Having worked very closely with Ray, and the Conti Ataack and Force tyres as well as all the other Conti products , for a year and a half I can personally vouch that he is a genuinly nice guy and he'll warranty a tyre/tube if a genuine fault has occured. and I haven't encountered any problems with his product in the 10 years I've been riding/mechanicing.

Conti had a problem mainly with the GP3000 tyres which were affected by UV attacking the silica tread compound. This caused tread separation from the tyre casing and/or cracking on the shoulder of the tyre. The problem was eventually eliminated after extensive testing of tyres in South Africa which had the highest incidence of failure due to extreme UV intensity. All such tyres were replaced under warranty if submitted to dealers.

The bead problem your're talking about sounds like bead core exposure which happens when too much force is applied when fitting the tyre. The material covering on the bead core gets torn or pulled away?resulting in ?

 

tearing of the material along the bead until eventually the tube is forced through the sidewall and blowing. This is a common problem and is caused through incorrect fitting methods. Never use extreme force and always lubricate tyres with soapy water on tyhe final seating section of the bead.

I have to to support Ray on this issue, as I import tyres too. (Schwalbe)

I see similar problems but in my experience this problem is usually due to Really good tyres being mounted on poorly built rims.

I beg to differ, you don't get rich quick in the cycling industry, it would shock you how little profit a bike shop makes off a set of tyres, and any other product for that matter.

I would say in a race or out riding its very difficult and highly impractical to use any lubricant when removing or replacing a tyre.

 

I dont believe any cyclist wantonly destroys his / her tyre - usually this is through ignorance or an impractical situation (like a race)

 

I would expect tyre manufacturers and distributors to be aware of this and re-act accordingly - its one thing to say "you damaged the tyre - sorry" - but its another to look a bit deeper at the circumstances and act accordingly - sadly I think too few representitives of any company do this - they simply toe the company line - which should be flexable.

 

On the other hand, as I said before - I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY BIKE WORKSHOP IN SA USING ANY LUBRICANT WHEN FITTING ANY TYRE - and I have had a fair number of contis fitted by *ahem* world class mechanics.

 

Surely education starts at the dealer and is passed down - if my shop fits a tyre without lube, It could be argued that this practise would be considered as acceptable.................after all, they are presumed to be the experts, not me.!!

FACT 1: Most of the time it is not practical to haul out (or to gob on/ waste your drink) on your tires when installing them.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

FACT 2: Riding on SA city or urban roads is hazardous for your tires health, particularly when tires are still new (they seem to have a stronger attraction for damaging causing debris). Damage such as cuts are not always noticeable while you are riding as they may start out from very small nicks / cuts which cannot be ?felt?.

 

Expecting Conti (or whoever) to replace a tire because of a cut might be a bit optimistic.

 

I think it?s fair to say that most people (professional mechs or DIY) don?t use any lubricant when installing a tire, even under perfect conditions (at home or in the bike shop). Tires can be installed 99,9999% (if you ignore tubeless mtb tiresSmile) of the time without lube. This does not mean that it is the correct way to do the job.

As long as you are not removing and installing the tires on a weekly basis you probably will never have a problem due to no lube.

 

Manufacturers / sales reps will ?throw? the ?you damaged it because you did it incorrectly?? book at you if they get the chance.
