There are various companies offering devices and services like this.

Google will find them.

e.g. http://www.sportstrack.net which is specifically aimed at sports like cycling.

More expensive device, although the website says it includes a 2 year data contract with no monthly charge.

Although not as accurate as GPS, if you just want to be able to get the current location of someone,  a cell phone with the "look for me" function enabled is a cheaper option.

You will however not get a track history (without some additional software).

I agree with ML - If you have a cellphone with buildin GPS or seperate bluetooth enabled GPS device there are a lot of options available.

There is certainly a market for all these products. Robust (cycling), own battery etc etc

But I like the fact that a cellphone allow you to install/write software compatible with the OS, allowing you to use the data supplied by the GPS in any way you want - navigating with garmin software, track capture, online tracking. Even Google Earth have mobile software version where you overlay your position on their satelite images (not normally included with navigation software)

These things have got emergency panic buttons that can let someone know if you are in trouble wich is way more valuble then  the GPS funtion.

I'm not trying to discredit the product - perfect for what it was designed for. I see nothing wrong with it, especially if you dont own a GPS yet.

But their might be people that want to do more with the the GPS function. An OS where you can decide what software (including panic alert) must run give you a certain freedom to do so. (AND of course negatives like battery llife when shared)

It should be possible for the company to release software that can run on your GPS-enabled mobile phone that you already paid for.

I used a SportsTrack for the Epic, and it worked quite well. The info is uploaded in real time (when there is cell phone coverage) to a website and people all over the world can monitor your progress. You also get an option to export the data to GoogleEarth. It also comes with the ability to make emergency calls if something goes wrong, and you can receive messages from the website on it.

What did Linega say about changing what people said when you quote Wink

I haven't actually - been meaning to download it for a while now. I loved Futurama - just a pity the TV bosses didn't...
