I need to get myself a chain spanner (to undo the chain brackets?). Got a KCM chain at the moment.

Question - Does one spanner unlock all chains or are they brand specific?

Or a quicklink remover?

Talking about this one yes.

Got the advise here to take the chain off when you need to clean it.

KMC remover tool sells for around R160.00

I know. What I need to know is that once you want a SRAM or Shimano chain, do you then need to get the brand specific quick link remover?

No, One pair of pliers will work for all quicklinks. Your LBS should have but otherwise all online stores will sell. I posted a link earlier to evobikes, tools. They have a few but there are many other sites you could shop on. I just used them as an example as I have shopped there before.

The ones PeterF posted are very nice. Not only because its ParkTool but also because it is dual action. You can remove and install. Some pliers you can only remove. You don't really need for installation, It's just nice to have.

Thanks. Used EVO bikes as well and like them a lot.

Then you wont need fancy-smancy pliers. Just use long nose pliers. BUT be warned it could damage your chain.

More worried about my fingers. Did have a go but it all went horribly wrong....chain still fine..... I have the use of 3 fingers left on my right hand...

Cool. If you don't get dual action pliers then to install you simply put the quicklink back on and then get it to "snap" together just rotate the chain till the link sits somewhere at the top(so between cluster and crank as apposed to crank and derailleur), then just put pressure on the crank without letting the wheel turn and it will snap closed properly. Rotate the crank backwards and make sure the link swivels nicely through the tight turns around cluster and jockey wheels.
