Side wall tear - Conti GP4000S II

Looking at the wear dimple in  the tread, It looks like you have not cycled a lot in the last three months, probably under 500km?

That kind of tear could (possibly but probably not) have been caused by the weight of the bike on the rim pushing against a flat tire (in storage) or a snake bit impact (more possible) against a rock/pavement and after pumping the tire a few times to 8 bar, it eventually tears.

It is sad that such a failure occurred so early in the tire's life.  Old tires (as in age not wear) do fail.  As a mtb/runner type, I have lost a number of road tires due to them just perishing on the rim as a result of non use,  so I know your pain

Bang on. Moved onto the IDT when the chill hit.

I never pump it that high. Road in the Souf, eish.

I follow another group where I posted this exact same question and several people there have complained about exactly the same thing (UK based). Many of those have since moved on to other brands.

Thanks everyone for your input so far! Like I've said, I'm going to try claim warranty from CWC. Will keep y'all posted!

If I am unsuccessful, what do peeps recommend? Should I use dedicated training tyres and dedicated racing tyres? Many people I know use Gatorskins and I know they are as tough as, well, 'gator skins!

CWC warrantied mine very quickly. It was a week before the DC, so I had a sob story on my side.

I have to bin 1 gp4000. I only use them for races, so not more than 1000km on them. Picked up a nice cut from the last Emperors race. I just see it as being part of cycling on sh!t south african roads.

Hope you get sorted with the claim.

Side walls on GP4000S is its weakness. I am currently using my ex race day tyre after clipping a stone in Boukert Soenen 2017, on the back of my commuter for this exact reason. Its got a little bulge where its been patched. Done about 900km on it since.

Conti's are pretty tollie in my experience. Well, at least the TLR MTB ones are. I've got a set at home that I just peeled off my Scott and replaced with proper TL Maxxis. Tread still looking lekker, but those TLR sidewalls look miff.

I have only had problems with Conti - so I don't trust them and am not surprised when they fail.

Good luck with the change out. Hope they can help you with at least a swop out.

On the MTB I use Vittoria Barzo front and Saguaro rear on the 29er race bike and Magic Mary front and Rock Razor rear on the 27.5 fun bike. But I have had some bad luck with the Barzo to be honest... have had a couple of tyre fluid sprinklers with that one.

Just an update - claim was rejected. Conti claims 'under-inflation'. Last time I'm buying Contis!

Got similar response when I had a blowout with car tyre.

Contis are good, but so are many others.

Sorry to hear but you've learnt a valuable lesson:

ride your bike all the time (no IDT)
