Ride in a westerly direction from Knysna town , towards George,  on yr MTB, around the lagoon, over the "white bridge", turn off towards Brenton on Sea, over the proper climb to Brenton on sea(300m) .  Enter the beach below the Hotel ,down the steps,  ride along the beach 5 ks  ( make sure it is 2 hours either way of low tide) toward Buffels bay, good hard sand (generally) Have coffee at the beach cafe, either return to Knysna along the beach, or head back to the main George road on tar, t junction right , on to the N2 back to Knysna.

700m climbing . not much change out of 4 hours ,  enjoy. You can do it in reverse, it is nice to ride along the beach in the same direction as the wind.

For a  shorter ride , turn off right onto dust road before white bridge  , go for a few ks along Knysna river, turn off  left over old red bridge, follow single track ,1 km,  to Phantom pass road, right ,  up the pass (200) m climb. At the top either turn left toward N2 , and back to Town on tar, or right to Totties cafe,  8 ks up the road,  for coffee/ brekkie, turn around and head back the same way you came up the pass. 2 hours ride excluding coffee.

The road past Totties is the 7 passes , old George road , 90 ks of passes to George !!  if you are bored keep going !

Enjoy .

From Knysna, head to Wilderness on N2, lots of shoulder no worries. Then swing up to the top of Hoekwill and back. 4 hours.

Then for 2 hours I would go to katara from Knysna and back.

All road.

Awesome, this sounds like something that I can compute.

Are there any cool passes in the area?

There aren't too many road routes!!!! It's either the N2 East, or the N2 West.

East is Plett (30km), Tsitsikamma (80km), nice wide shoulder once past Plett and relatively flat ride (once out of Knysna & Plett hollows) all the way past the Bloukrans bungi, as far as you want to ride.

West is Sedgefield (25km), George (65km). Also a fairly wide shoulder for most of it. though narrower than most of the East side. A few more hills, some tarred turn offs, that you can explore.

Otherwise, not too many options. Maybe look on FB, Cycle Knysna/Cycle Plett, or chat to Knysna Cycleworcks, they ride both road and mtb. Sedgefield Cyclewworx do a road ride every weekend.

Awesome, thanks dude, appreciate it!

The N2 isn't a problem is it? Regular cycling road?

I don't know of any knockdowns on either route, east or west, but it is a main road, so I stick to the very left. Sunday morning is always better, of course.

I rode towards wilderness from knysna this morning. First climb out of knysna has minimal shoulder (call it 6 inches, if i'd been on my mtb i would have ridden in the concrete igutter) and no quarter given by cars in left lane. Roads off n2 not in great nic, no shoulder to speak of.

Too many ex golfers MTBIng in Knysna to enjoy it ;)

Hehehe....point taken.

How about the route toward the Garden Route Trail Park? Go over Phantom Pass, toward Rheenendal to Bike Park and return down toward N2 via Barrington Road. Can be done in reverse too. Only for gravel bike tho.

Not sure how long that would take, quite a bit of climbing and distance of about 75km.

You did say gravel roads as well, which is why I mentioned the 7 Passes. What you riding?

CX bike, but I don't want to get lost. So out and backs on the N2 work very well.

I'll have 2 maybe 3 hours to ride Sat afternoon, and 4 hours Sunday morning. If that route is doable in that time, please can you post a map maybe, I would really appreciate it.
