Thanks for all the feedback guys. It is highly appreciated. I will be heeding your advise and taking my time in the purchase and will definately stay away fro the "makro" bikes :D .

I the meantime, I have pics of the actual Nomad for sale. I would like some info on the brakes and gears on the pics. How good are they? Are the breaks hydraulic or cable. The reason for this is so I know how to identify the quality of these components while shopping around.

TIA

It's got hydraulic brakes, and what looks like a 3x8 groupset.

Very entry level stuff, but more than adequate if you are starting out, and assuming it can have some fresh cables and housing, a brake bleed, a good clean and some fresh grease, it should be a solid starter bike.

Another fair deal, just be careful of buying cheap I know you have only a certain budget but faaaaark is replacing mtb parts expensive so you might buy a bike and end up spending another 1-2k at your lbs. Maybe take someone with to check the bike our if you're not mechanically minded.

Other than that what an awesome hobby/addiction... nice seeing guys giving such helpful advice here, I've always come right asking around on the bikehub

Apologies for the delayed reply, work has got me by the ()()'s these days :)

Wow I am amazed at the help offered on this forum, Thanks for all the advise.

@5TU, thanks for the awesome gesture in offering your old parts. I unfortunately dont want to stretch the budget too much because I dont want to spend too much only to have life get in the way, with no spare time to ride.

I would much rather get something budget for now to start, see were it takes me and how I can make part of daily living, even if it means a 30 min ride every second day, then upgrade from there.

@TDFN, if only you were in jhb bud.
